Thinking Man's Collection of Jokes

I found this book when I was on a business trip and needed some entertainment in the evening. Most of the jokes and anecdotes lead to a good chuckle and some are hilarious. What appeals to me most about this book is the commentary that Asimov supplies in the way of background to each piece of humor.

The ONLY humor compilation I've ever seen in which I laughed at almost all of the jokes. Asimov's commentaries are equally entertaining. Much better than the sequel, "Asimov Laughs Again."

Full of facts the author is well versed in this stuff of life.

This book on mitochondria is not a long read and the last 22% is about the author and the references. It can seem a bit too scientific at first with all the chemistry and biology lessons, but I still found it very interesting. He his very well versed in this subject and he is on a mission to get his message out. I was surprised to learn that mitochondria have their own DNA, go figure. The good news he points to his that mitochondria can be subject to biogenesis. Two ways we help that along is with exercise namely aerobic and using three supplements with the 'objective is to achieve a wide array of beneficial changes.' Two of the supplements are used by body builders, but I would be surprised if they know of the benefits to our cellular power plants. Your left hanging a bit, in that he does not tell what dosage, or from where to buy them. I found similar supplements on the net, though, and the price was not crazy. It is a worthwhile read on such an important subject, similar to how DNA knowledge has strongly affected the course of events..

Thee book for wheel building.

This is a great book for wheel building. If you're thinking about building your own wheels this book is the one resource you can't do without. Explains why it's important for different wheel types to have different cross patterns and thicker spokes. How to center the offset on the rear wheel, how to remove tension and set the correct tension on the wheels. Just everything you could think of. Not a textbook, it's only 120 pages, but it's also not easy reading but not rocket science either. Some math is needed but nothing you couldn't handle if you made it through high school. This is the book every shop should have for reference or just to explain things to a customer. Great diagrams when needed.

For the specialist in the making

Bluntly: If you are a tinkerer whose greatest ambition is to true a wheel or venture into replacing a spoke set this book is not for you. Any good bicycle manual (my favorite is Zinn's) and / or online resource will give the hands-on information you need.

However, if you are a tinkerer who wants to become a pro, or want to build your own quality wheels from scratch; or if you are just curious and seeking a comprehensive understanding how your "wheelie" works, I recommend this little treatise as a must-have reference. It delivers comprehensive information about the inner workings of your bicycle wheels (I was surprised with which astounding forces their structure have to deal with!) plus useful hints on what would be best to chose for your project.

Be advised that this book is very technical,with a good deal of math in it. It clearly makes emphasis on the engineering aspect of wheel building. It might be advisable to get a more hands-on practical info as a complimentary information source if you don't have one already.

This book is currently only available in hardcover format and that is good, because it has many graphics and data tables which still are easier to read on paper; and includes some blank pages for making notes which is cool. The book is sheer quality: Nice paper, solidly made, with beautiful binding; format and weight are just right; the font is easily readable. It makes a perfect gift for someone who is serious about bicycle mechanics, and at this price it's a good deal.

This book is a very good book. it is well researched and pretty easy to follow. the illustrations are clear and easy to understand. If you want to understand the spoked wheel you would be hard pressed to find a better book.
My only problem with this book is while it does an excellent job of explaining and taking you step by step through building a three cross wheel it does not guide you through a four cross wheel which is what I wanted to build; however with this book and a couple of other resources I was able to build the wheel I wanted.
I still like this book so well I bought it a second time and even paid more for it the second time, the first one was stolen.

Feels Like a Chapter in a Bigger Book

I was really excited when I picked up this book and flicked through it in the book store. I am always looking to broaden my perspective on design and incorporate techniques to make my work stronger. I knew right away that this book was conceptual and did not have instructions on how to actually incorporate the grids, this was fine with me. However I feel like the entire book is so bloated with repetition and irrelevancy that the small amount of information could have been present as a chapter in a web design book. Even with what the book does have printed it is incredibly short, if you remove the unneeded there would only be a few pages of useful information. I also feel like the font and formatting was obnoxious and difficult to read(I am young and I don't think I have said that before in my life).

Overall I think this book is an overpriced piece of fluff and your money is better spent elsewhere to improve your design aesthetic.

Lots and lots of padding

I'm not a huge fan of Khoi's work, but I do respect his abilities enough to have had my interests piqued when I learned that he'd written a book on what it is he does. The entire point of titles like these is basically to watch how other people like to work so you can compare and contrast the solutions they arrive at against your own, and in that regard, it does not disappoint. Unfortunately, the bulk of the text is a lot of thoroughly irrelevant filler that talks down to its target audience as though they have no idea what designers do or how they do it. The first four chapters in particular are a complete waste of time, and even when you get to the good parts, there's a lot of over-explanation and exposition that doesn't need to be there. If you took out all the fluff, you'd basically have a really long blog post's worth of information, and I'm hard-pressed to justify the fact that I spent this much money on it.

And the font the entire thing is set in is just ridiculous. I know we're all really jazzed about the Tron sequel and all, but was this typographic homage to 80's era futurism really necessary?

Worth a look, but borrow someone else's copy if you can.

Great book that needs a demo website

This is a great book that takes you through the design process to construct a fictional website, Designery.us. Unfortunately, you can't go to this site to see how the layout works; a feature that would definitely help the learner. Additionally, I could not find references to sites like [...] where you can overlay a grid system to test your layouts or the 960 Grid System Site (960.gs) to generate CSS. Although not the focus of this book, it would be nice to actually see the code used to construct this site. HTML5 and CSS are sorely missing from this book.

Overall it is a good overview that I enjoyed reading and learned from.
