About the Author
William Renwick completed B. Mus, and M. Mus. degrees at the University of British Columbia, following which he took the M. Phil. and Ph.D. degrees in Music Theory at the City University of New York, where he specialised in Schenkerian studies under Carl Schachter, Joel Lester, and Charles Burkhart. He is Professor of Music Theory in the School of the Arts, McMaster University. His research interests encompass studies in tonal counterpoint and analysis and Gregorian chant as well as computer applications in music research. His publications include Analyzing Fugue: A Schenkerian Approach (Pendragon, 1995), and The Langloz Manuscript: Improvising Fugue from Thoroughbass (Oxford, 2001), as well as articles in Journal of Music Theory, Music Theory Spectrum, Music Analysis, Bach Perspectives, Music Theory Online, Theoria, Computers in Music Research, Canadian University Music Review, Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy, and other journals. He is currently working on the first modern edition of the Music of the Sarum Office. In 2002 he was a Fellow of the Mannes Institute for Advanced Studies in Music Theory. He is a founding member of the Gregorian Institute of Canada, and of the McMaster Institute of Music and the Mind. William Renwick is also an organist, composer, and choral director. He holds the Associate degree of the American Guild of Organists and the Fellow of the Royal Canadian College of Organists. He has performed concerts and recitals throughout the region. In 1999 he served as co-chair of The Canadian Organ Festival in Hamilton. He is Music Director at Saint Mary the Virgin Church in Hamilton Ontario, and director of the Hamilton Schola Cantorum.

Offering the first long-duration analysis of the relationship between the state and religion in South Asia, this book looks at the nature and origins of Indian secularism. It interrogates the proposition that communalism in India is wholly a product of colonial policy and modernisation, questions whether the Indian state has generally been a benign, or disruptive, influence on public religious life, and evaluates the claim that the region has spawned a culture of practical toleration.

The book is structured around six key arenas of interaction between state and religion: cow worship and sacrifice, control of temples and shrines, religious festivals and processions, proselytising and conversion, communal riots, and religious teaching/doctrine and family law. It offers a challenging argument about the role of the state in religious life in a historical continuum, and identifies points of similarity and contrast between periods and regimes. The book makes a significant contribution to the literature on South Asian History and Religion.

Kindergarten-Grade 4–King Humpty Dumpty surrounds his world with a fence, thereby separating his colorful kingdom from the dim, dusty domain of the peasants. He spends his days smelling the flowers, enjoying the songs of birds, eating elegant meals, admiring artwork (paintings of himself), and reading by the light of the setting sun reflecting off diamonds. When a curious peasant peeks over the fence, the enraged king fires all of his staff and begins building a higher barrier out of heavy stones. However, the pampered monarch is unused to such work and has a terrible fall, landing on the other side of the wall. The peasants bury him with little fanfare, and the book concludes with the traditional nursery rhyme. Delessert's gray-and-brown peasants resemble the whimsical mice and rabbitlike creatures in A Was an Apple Pie (Creative Editions, 2005). Humpty has an egg-shaped head with a large protruding nose and wears a golden half-circle crown. The surreal landscape is embellished with realistic-looking birds and flowers. The illustrations are the real strength of the book. Unfortunately, this interpretation of Humpty Dumpty is too bleak and heavy-handed and lacks child appeal.–Robin L. About the Author
Etienne Delessert was born in 1941 in Switzerland. For more than thirty years the self-taught artist has been translating his and the world’s ideas, passions, fantasies, and nightmares into the visual language of books, magazine illustrations, posters, animated films, paintings, and sculptures. His imaginary creatures and landscapes juxtapose chaos and order, the familiar and the fantastic, the serious and the joyous, to clarify this world and create new and surprising universes. Delessert has illustrated more than eighty books, including collaborations with avant-garde playwright Eugene Ionesco and renowned psychologist Jean Piaget. His internationally acclaimed books have been translated into more than fifteen languages and have garnered numerous awards and distinctions, including ten gold medals from the American Society of Illustrators. He lives in Connecticut with his wife, designer Rita Marshall, and their son Adrien.

Humpty

Delessert's illustrations are, of course, bright and whimsical and delightful. I bought this book for my granddaughter. When she came to see me recently, we went to an exhibit of Delessert's illustrations for his children's books. I wanted her to read some of the books before we went, so she could "meet" Delessert before seeing the exhibit. She loved the books and was totally enchanted with the exhibit, reading each book on display beside the original illustrations. Not only are the drawings bright and appealing, but Delessert makes of Humpty a story of selfishness set against gentle graciousness.

Great Book for Part-Time Programmers

Firstly, this book covers Fortran 90 and 95 in great detail, offering many helpful suggestions to those who are used to older versions of Fortran, such as Fortran 77, and highlighting the differences between the 90 and 95 versions. Where this book shines is in the hundreds of examples of and bits of advice on good programming practice spread throughout the book. It's specifically tailored to those "part-time" programmers, scientists and engineers who do not come from a computer science or software engineering background. Most current (and new) Fortran programmers would benefit greatly by learning the programming style found here. I can't agree with all the advice, however, such as abandoning the basic "real" and "double precision" data types in favor of the new "kind" parameterized types. Still, the philosophy behind such advice is sound, and good programmers will know when and when not to use specific language features. One subject unfortunately missing from the book is programming for parallel processors, and other techniques to speed programs up. But most Fortran programmers don't need to worry about this subject and those who do can get O'Reilly's "High Performance Computing" and Jon Bentley's "Writing Efficient Programs". The examples and quizzes within, and the exercises at the end of, each chapter make this a great textbook. The appendices and index make it useful as a reference book. If you program in Fortran 90 or 95, I'd say this book is a must-have.

Good for beginners and transfers

Despite some of the negative comments on this book, I bought it anyway. The remarks that this is not a reference manual is unjust. Chapman never claims that the book is supposed to be a reference manual, so don't expect one. The book is written for those who begin to learn Fortran 95 or want to upgrade their skills to make the transition from Fortran 77.

The build-up of the book is excellent. After every Chapter I had the feeling I learned something new, and understood how the Fortran 95 features would help me code more efficiently than in Fortran 77 (which I have done for about 20 years). The exercises and examples help a lot in that direction and I really appreciate the way in which Chapman uses real-life problems, like sorting names or phone numbers, or small physics problems.

It has been said in reviews that the index is marginal, but that is clearly fixed in the Second Edition (the index is 20 pages long). Another suggestion that the examples are too simple is also unjust. I've learned quite a bit from them. Don't forget that it is no use to make the examples and exercises so difficult that they become untractable.

On the critical side I can add a few items of discontent:

- There are quite a few typos and errors in the book and despite the reference to the publishers website where errata should be found, that website doesn't even seem to know that the Second Edition exists. All the material there is for the first edition.

- I do not see the use for providing flowcharts AND pseudo code next to the actual Fortran 95 code. The pseudo code is so much like the real code that it is just a waste of space. Flowcharts would suffice.

- Chapman gets a bit repetitive at times. At the end of each Chapter it repeats the "Good practices" and the newly introduced commands and statements basically verbatim from earlier in that Chapter. Also each Quiz quite annoyingly starts with the sentence "This quiz provides a quick check to see if you understand the concepts introduced in this section......"

Overall "Fortran 90/95 for Scientists and Engineers" lives up to its title. Assuming that Fortran 95 is mostly used by scientists and engineers this is a really good book to start learning Fortran 95. At the end of it you will be able to write efficient and correct Fortran 95 code.

Impressive Work

Hadzic's Peripheral Nerve Blocks and Anatomy for USGRA offers up to date information for beginners or novice in the field of Regional Anesthesia. Having just purchased the book, i am impressed at what this book has to offer. This is an impressive textbook written by worlds expert in the field. It offers fundamental knowledge on performance of nerve blocks with nerve stimulation as well as ultrasound guidance. What is unique about this textbook is the display of gross anatomical dissections along with ultrasound imaging. This is something that i have never seen in other textbooks. Furthermore, most chapters offer flowcharts that help to summarize important facts and details. This book is a must buy for residents in training and anesthesiologists in practice.

Not a bad book but still antiquated with the majority of the ...

Not a bad book but still antiquated with the majority of the book directed toward stim. Out of 8 sections, only 3 directed toward US. The US section is OK but for the size of this book should have more images of what to avoid (aberrant arteries, et cetera), Would like to see more detail in regard to US. It is pointless focusing just on stim anymore.

Great textbook and atlas!

This is printed on glossy paper throughout with glorious color illustrations. I am a first year Orthopedics and Trauma resident in Japan and I found this extremely helpful and easy to understand. All the recommendations are very practical and based on literature reviews and the ultrasound images are state of the art. The range of techniques described is impressive. All the rarely used and new blocks are here and described in detail so I feel I can start applying them with the book alone even though I don't have anyone to guide me through the procedures here.
On Hokkaido we don't have enough anesthesiologists so when I go to work at a rural hospital next year I would probably have to make extensive use of this manual. Gonna add a review based on clinical experience then.

About the Author

Henry M. Sayre is Distinguished Professor of Art History at Oregon State University-Cascades Campus in Bend, Oregon. He earned his Ph.D. in American Literature from the University of Washington. He is producer and creator of the 10-part television series, A World of Art: Works in Progress, aired on PBS in the fall of 1997; and author of seven books, including A World of Art, The Visual Text of William Carlos Williams, The Object of Performance: The American Avante-Garde since 1970; and an art history book for children, Cave Paintings to Picasso.

A well organized, narrative-style text with good primary source selection and instructor support

I am using this book in the fall for all of my Intro to Humanities classes (I teach at a community college). I've taught before with this text and with Gloria Fiero's Landmarks in Humanities, and I've looked through a number of similar texts, like Sayre's Continuity and Change.

There are a few reasons I prefer the Sayre text. First, it's well organized. Intro to Humanities courses can be hard to keep a lid on, in terms of content. Humanities is a massive category encompassing art, music, philosophy, architecture, religion... basically everything human beings have done since the beginning of time. So the fact that Sayre gets this into relatively concise chapters is a feat in itself. And I know the chapters can feel long to students. They are dense with material, and ideally you'll have enough time to really dig in. If you try to take in too much material at a time -- and this also goes for profs who assign too much, too fast -- it's a little overwhelming.

Second: Sayre provides a good cross-section of primary sources from cultures including the far East and Africa. There's no denying most Humanities survey courses are Western- and Euro-centric. But this text does a good job including sculptures, structures, paintings, and artifacts from cultures outside the West that give students something to use as a point of comparison. Also, I think the selection of primary sources gives a good sampling of the most important human creations. It's a monumental task to decide what handful of artifacts students will look at to learn about an entire civilization over a millennium. No one text can probably do this job perfectly, but I am satisfied with this one.

Third: Maybe this shouldn't be as important in selecting a text, but Pearson, the publisher behind this text, really scores high with me for all the instructor support material they include. With some texts, you get a desk copy and a "good luck." From the first semester I taught with Sayre (I was using the first edition then), I had test banks, chapter outlines, PowerPoints, DVDs with multimedia, and PDFs of teaching resources to help me make the best experience I could for the students. I used the chapter outlines to make pared-down versions for the students.

In this current 2nd edition, the end of every chapter has a glossary of vocabulary terms you need to know to speak/write intelligently about the material. Before the glossary existed, I used to collect the bold terms from each page of the chapter and make crossword puzzles to help students learn vocabulary.

Finally: I've been studying the new 2nd edition to see what else is new, and I appreciate the little sections in the margins that connect different ideas and art works with other times and other places. The humanities aren't interesting if you don't make connections. For example, how cool is it that Michelangelo's "Creation of Adam" on the Sistine chapel ceiling has Adam sitting in the same exact position as the unnamed man from a frieze on the Greek Parthenon? Or that the 11th-century Bayeux tapestry and a 14th century painting by Giotto both include a night sky with big star with a tail? It's not the North Star... it was Halley's comet, which we see embedded into art throughout the centuries.

Tl;dr: It's a well organized, narrative-style text with a good cross section of primary sources and a bucketload of instructor support material. All in all, a win.

What I dislike about the book is that it had a lot of pages to read. I would recommend this book to other people.

The Practical Guide

Compared to many other Corporate Finance books I enjoy this one for a structure of the presented material , clear explanations supported by real examples, concept checks , odd numbers answers (provided at the end of the textbook) to the exercises. Definitely it gives me a guidance to handle many everyday cases. In addition , for me truly helpful is huge information on the textbook"s website.
This one is the first Corporate F. book I used to study without feelings of something boring , abstract , overloaded by awesome math.
I would give 5 stars if Online Study Tools had items: "eGrade Self-test" , "Business Extra" materials (as specified - Coming Soon!) and (to many Chapters)- "Additional Readings" from business articles / websites.

Great study resource!

I have been ordering many copies of this book for faculty, students and residents that request it. A year ago, one of the Board examiners in the Specialty of Prosthodontics recommended it for the "specialty" exam preparation, in particular because the book emphasizes an appraisal of literature in clinical decision making.

I highly recommend this book.

Was a bit disappointed with this book. The cases are not discussed in depth in regards to the treatment planning. Many of the cases do not have final treatment pictures, and those that are available are small with poor picture quality. Some of the cases are very interesting except the authors don't always discuss the treatment done that much. Very little information provided. I do think it's a good book to provide broad information for undergraduate dental students.

Virginia Heckert is photography curator and head of the Department of Photographs at the J. Paul Getty Museum. She is the author of Ed Ruscha and Some Los Angeles Apartments (Getty Publications, 2013) and coauthor of Irving Penn: Small Trades (Getty Publications, 2009).

I love the book

I love the book, itself; it is brilliantly written and inspiring. An excellent springboard further into abstract photography. However, a replacement version STILL arrived with a broken spine, completely detached from the book. I'm not sure if this is true of all the editions, but it's disconcerting for the price. You expect something in immaculate condition.

Actually my copy came with a defective binding. The cover detached from the pages on first opening. Very poor book construction especially for the price
