Hélène Desportes, born in 1620, was the first child of French parents to be born in Quebec and to survive. For nine years, she lived in Samuel de Champlain’s Habitation. Hélène's World includes a lot of the history of early Quebec and French colonizing efforts along the banks of the St. Lawrence River in the New World.  The stories and traditions of seventeenth-century Quebec and France are relevant.  We can better understand Hélène and her French-Canadian neighbors when we know something about the world in which they lived. People are likely to have more in common with their peers than with preceding and future generations. Their daily activities, homes, diet, clothing, and challenges faced, as well as their religious and social values, generally reflect the realities of life and the societal customs for their time and place.

Hélène's World is an admittedly imperfect picture of Hélène Desportes. We can only surmise what she was thinking or feeling. In reality, all biographies are incomplete. We can never know all of the hopes, sorrows, and dreams of another individual. Hélène left no diary, no letters. If we limit ourselves to the official records from church and civil archives, we are drawing a stick figure. Seeing Hélène within the historical and cultural context of the world which she inhabited adds substance to her story and rounds out the picture we have of her life.

About the Author
Susan McNelley, with her Masters in the Humanities, has long been interested in women’s stories, particularly those occurring in other places and in other times. She has also been researching family history for some thirty years. A few years ago, she was able to trace her ancestry back to seventeenth-century Quebec and to Hélène Desportes. Thus began a quest to learn more about what life was like for the early colonists. Hélène’s World, thoroughly researched and documented, is the fascinating story of Hélène Desportes and the other seventeenth-century French-Canadian pioneers.

Helene's World - rare insight into the life of an "ordinary" woman living through extraordinary times

I was so glad to find and purchase Helene’s World by Susan McNelley. The book, tracing the likely life story of Helene Desportes in early New France, was enlightening, enjoyably written, well documented and of special interest to me as a student of history and genealogy. The book filled in and tied together many of the bare facts of history, giving them a narrative and a context. For me, it answered many questions about the pioneer experience, with insights on women, religion, the native population, the situation in France, and conditions of those who survived the first years in New France. Without fanfare, McNelley gives Helene her due for enduring and contributing to the establishment of the colony. I am also a descendent of Helene’s, through her daughter Francoise Hebert and her son Alphonse Morin. French Canadians are fortunate to have so much of our ancestry documented, but the actual story remains quite unknown. McNelley has done an impressive job to illuminate the lives and people of early Canada, who lived at such a precarious and yet fascinating time.

This book will appeal to French Canadians researching their family trees because almost everyone has Hélène Desportes in their lineage. General readers who enjoy history will enjoy this book because it clearly presents the founding of Québec. It was so easy to imagine how difficult life was in the New World for Europeans, many who came from urban environments. That there are so many Franco-Americans today is a testimony to their perseverance. The book is well cited, and Susan McNelley also provided a synopsis of what happened to Hélène's children.

"Helene's World": A wonderful introduction to the early history of New France

This engaging introduction into the world of the first French colonists of Quebec, invites the reader to enter the everyday world of the colonists, the challenges and the triumphs of surviving and flourishing in this new and alien environment. Written from the perspective of the life of the first girl born in the new colony, it makes the adventure of establishing and adapting European culture to the "new world" very accessible to modern readers. Important, but often neglected aspects of the lives of the colonists, namely securing sufficient food, and, extended family relationships and social bonds, are clearly brought out. Since most histories of New France focus on the missionary efforts of the Jesuits among the Amerind population, the fur trade, or the military/strategic aspects of French colonial rule, this is a fresh approach, comparable to a "family history", at the same time introducing the important aspects of Amerind relations, missionary and other religious aspects of 17th century Colonial life, as well as the effects of the fur trade, relations with the Mother Country, and the characters of Colonial administration.
I think that "Helene's World" should be required reading in all secondary and collegiate-level Introduction to American History classes.

Cindy Correa has spent the majority of her time teaching in technical schools and colleges that offer medical career programs. Most recently, she was the Allied Health Educational Coordinator and senior instructor at City University of New York at Queens College. Cindy was responsible for the initial creation and curricula development of at least seven certificate programs of the Allied Health Program and extended her expertise to satellite courses in outlying adult education programs. Her experience and understanding of the dynamics and challenges of teaching in technical schools, including computer lab courses, has helped create a book that facilitates instructors and students. Her experience working in the private practice and administrative hospital environments includes oncology, cardiovascular surgery, pulmonology, and thoracic surgery.

Out dated literature

I purchased this book for my computerized med office class at school. I found it very hard to follow and very hard to concentrate in the activities in the book. I felt chapter questions where vague and not applicable to the information covered in the chapter. I consider myself to be an education person; I graduated with a 4.0 GPA and finished the program early. This may have been a good book in its day, but technology has changed so much, it has basically rendered the book useless in my eyes.

At the center of Grooms's riveting first novel is Walter Burke, a black American soldier in Vietnam who is attempting to compose a letter to the parents of one of his fallen comrades. The bulk of the novel occurs in flashback , focusing on Walter's turbulent adolescence in Tittusville, the Birmingham suburb where he lived with his parents and younger sister, Josie. (The title refers to violence surrounding the civil rights movement.) Walter's parents, who refuse to participate in boycotts and rallies, try to shield the children from the turmoil stoked by redneck police commissioner (and rumored KKK grand dragon) Bull Connor. But when their mother is diagnosed with brain cancer, things begin to fall apart. Choosing religion over medicine, their mother deteriorates rapidly - both mentally and physically - and their exasperated father, a teacher and staunch advocate of "thinking scientifically," begins a corresponding descent into alcoholism, eventually leaving home to live in a motel. Encouraged by Walter's best friend, Lamar Burrell, and Lamar's activist mother, Walter and Josie find themselves at the front lines of the struggle for civil rights, secretly attending meetings, going to demonstrations led by Martin Luther King Jr., and ultimately facing police dogs and fire hoses. Whether describing the daily indignities of life under Jim Crow laws of the ignorance and brutality of the men who enforce them, Grooms writes with grace and clarity, never resorting to sentimentality or gratuitous button-pushing. Though Walter contends that "the world is a tumultuous place and every should in it suffers," Grooms confronts this suffering head-on, showing that hope and dignity sometimes can be reclaimed in the process. Adult/High School-Walter Burke, a foot soldier serving in Vietnam, is trying to write a letter to the family of a friend who has been killed, but he can't find the right words. Memories triggered, he veers from the horrors of the present to those of his past as a black child in Alabama at the dawn of the civil rights movement. All mental paths lead to an examination of violence (sometimes graphically portrayed). Though the narrative returns to Vietnam periodically, this is chiefly the story of a period in Walter's childhood in Birmingham, whose black residents have dubbed "Bombingham" in recognition of the KKK's preferred method of attack there. Walter may be seeing an epic struggle, but he is young and his view is artless: he simply notes that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. "spoke encouragingly" to the crowd; and when he sees Dr. Abernathy arrested, he is most troubled by the lack of respect shown the man. His worldview is dominated by his family life; that, too, is in crisis, and his best friend leads him into every sort of trouble, including dangerous encounters with police at demonstrations. Some readers will be frustrated by the novel's slow accretion of detail and meandering plot, but those who can adjust to the pace of the protagonist's thoughtful inner life will come to know and like him, and have a vivid and memorable experience of his world.

Poet and short-story writer Grooms (Trouble No More) has written a moving novel about the destruction of hope. Narrator Walter recalls being swept up with his sister in the Civil Rights marches in Birmingham at a time when their mother lay dying of cancer and their father drifted into alcoholism. As Walter awakened to the hopes and dreams of freedom through the teachings of the Civil Rights leaders, his own ability to dream and hope withered with the physical death of his mother and the spiritual death of his father. Walter looks back on this period of his life from the midst of the carnage of the Vietnam War, in which he is both victim and perpetrator. Although apparently callous to the deaths surrounding him, he is troubled by his lack of emotions. Retracing his past offers no answers and no healing. Grooms provides a vivid picture of the heady and confusing days of the fight for civil rights in Birmingham, the historical conditions of racism accompanied by arbitrary death and violence, and a young boy spiritually wounded by social injustice, violence, and the disintegration of his family. Pleasantly surprised!

I wasn't quite sure what to expect. Honestly, Bombingham was a book club selection for me, so I had no choice in reading it! Initially I thought I would have a difficult time getting into the Vietnam sub-plot narrated by a male protagonist, but once I got started, I couldn't stop! It offered a viewpint often overlooked in media; the fact that the same black men who were sent to fight in Vietnam were coming from the ugly heart of Jim Crow, segregation, and an America bent on oppression. How difficult (impossible) it must have been to fight for a country that didn't fight for you...
I loved the depth of the characters, especially the family dynamics. For every action there is a catalyst, and the reader was presented with the opportunity to see the story from all perspectives.
Wonderful book!

Where Were You When They Bombed the Children?

How many of us remember the burning of homes and black businesses and the bombing of a church where four little girls were sitting in Sunday School? In Anthony Grooms' touching, poignant novel, Bombingham, you will travel back in time and be reminded, if you are old enough, and introduced if you were not, to that turbulent time of unrest in U.S. history. Bombingham became synonymous for Birmingham, Alabama because of the bombings of Negro homes and businesses was such common occurrences.
Fast forward to the Viet Nam War where Walter Burke finds himself with the dreaded task of writing to the parents of one of his fallen war comrades. How do you write a letter to the parents of a dead soldier? Haywood was a country boy from rural Alabama and was in awe of the fact that Walter was from Birmingham, the big city, where the civil rights struggle was prominent. Walter attempts to write this letter to make Haywood's parents understand why he was unable to discuss that dark, ominous period over several months that changed his life forever.
The story is told in first person from Walter as an eleven year-old boy from a solid middle class family in Birmingham. His father is a high school science teacher and mother a secretary for a wealthy black businessman. They were the kind of family we see on a funeral home fan; handsome father, pretty mother, young well-groomed boy and little sister with perfectly braided hair. They don't raise their voices, are nice people and a credit to the Negro race. But the pretty picture is shattered within a few months when a series of tragic events occur, events that mark the end of Walter's childhood innocence and existence.
He and his best friend, Lamar, a boy from the projects, are a pair of kids who ride their bicycles and have a paper route. Their dreams are to be astronauts; they cling to this hope though they realize that as Negroes, the chances are near impossible. Nevertheless they pursue their endeavors by collecting and dissecting specimens. Lamar is a daring kid and one day he talks Walter and his sister, Josie into trespassing in the Whites only park where they are caught and severely reprimanded by a White man. Meanwhile the civil rights movement has come to Birmingham full force and the children are pulled into it. Many of the Negro adults are fearful of the movement, some because of the fear of losing their government and teaching positions as well as domestic jobs, and many because they view the civil rights movement as something done by those "troublemakers". Walter's parents fall into both categories as many Negroes do, who feared for their lives standing up for basic human rights. Because many of the parents could not or would not join the marches and sit-ins, the children did so, embracing the charge with enthusiasm and fervor.
When Walter's mother becomes seriously ill, the family falls apart leaving in its wake alcoholism, abuse, and destroyed dreams that continued to haunt him as an adult. The notion that all blacks were for the movement is dispelled as many of them were in a resigned state of hopelessness and belief that is was the Negroes' lot to dare not hope for change. Poignant, compelling, moving, this story is however a testament to those brave souls, including the children, who sacrificed and stepped up to the plate for righteousness only to have their spirits and very lives snuffed out of them. This novel is a must read for those who have an interest in the civil rights movement. Thank you, Mr. Grooms for sharing this heart warming story.

A Child's Perspective

Walter Burke is a soldier in Vietnam and has just witnessed the death of his buddy Haywood. He's made a promise to Haywood that if he died he would send a letter to his parents explaining the circumstances. In contemplation of the letter Walter recounts his childhood in the sixties. He lived in the hotbed of the civil right movement a neighborhood called Titusville near Birmingham, otherwise known as Bombingham.
Walter his family, sister Josie, mother Clara and father Carl are living a nice enough suburban life. His father a teacher and "scientist" his mother a secretary. The family lives as normal a life as one can in this segregated city and they steer clear of clear of "the agitators" and live their lives, working, going to school and for Walter hanging out with his best friend Lamar. They are soon however pulled in to the movement by an event that changes the family forever. As Walter watches his family break apart at the seams, he, Josie and Lamar, all children are drawn into the movement because they "had to" be a part of it.
In Bombingham, Grooms tells an amazing story of the civil rights movement through the eyes of a child, Walter. Bombingham is a story of loss, of faith and of fear and is gripping all the way through. Though fictional, the child's perspective shines a new light on how the struggle for civil rights affected blacks at the most intimate of levels, in their very homes, in their very families.

[NOT YOUNG ADULT] What could have been a great story, shot down by unlikable characters, dubious consent concerns, and worse.

I need to say right up front: This book is marketed as "Young Adult", and it is anything BUT. The category is defined by the themes contained within the story. Just because your main characters are all about 17-year olds, that doesn't make you a YA book. YA and I are so close we're practically family. This book was like a stranger at the dinner table.

I actually interrupted another book to read this one, and I'm still not sure why. It's not even in my normal genre preference. I just remember reading the summary, seeing the cover, and thinking "I'd like to read that." Ella Harper was an interesting main character, full of spirit, and she led her story well. The writing was even pretty decent for the first 2/3rd of the book.

Call me old-fashioned, when we decide "attempted date rape" is the best catalyst for getting the two leads to hook up, the story stops being enjoyable. Now, the male lead, Reed Royal, did not actually attempt the date rape, but when Ella is drugged and the Royal brothers save her, how is the natural conclusion "Someone is gonna need to 'help' her with her drug-induced horniness." Sorry, what? WHAT? So maybe Reed Royal didn't attempt the date rape, but he's 1000000% guilty of engaging in dubious consent.

"I feel like I'm taking advantage of you."

Yes, Reed, because you are! Ella is high on a date-rape cocktail, and you're like "Well, but she said she was okay with me 'helping' her, so..." This isn't even the only incident like this in the story. At one point Reed actually *propositions* her while they're out yachting, saying that she's a dirty whore but he'll take care of her sexual needs as long as she doesn't touch the rest of his family. Ella's second morning in the household, two of her new "brothers" joke about raping her. To Ella's credit, she does point out to the readers "Sexual assault isn't about getting laid. It's about power.", indicating they don't need to use sex to have power over her.

Ella's actually very good about playing it smart. It's something that made her extremely likeable as a character. (Up until sex was involved, and suddenly she can't think at all.) She knows a handsome face doesn't make someone a good person. Ella gets the difference between what her body wants and what her mind wants. She knows the value of education as a means to rise above poor circumstances. Ella Harper has lots of qualities that make her a great main character.

Remember when I said the writing was good for the first 2/3rds of the book and was not Young Adult? The last third of this book read like a smutty magazine you'd find under a mattress. Nevermind that Ella was smart and self-sufficient. Once she and Reed hook up, it's like sex-sex-sex all the time on her brain. She can barely look at Reed without wanting to get busy with him, and the book goes into GRAPHIC detail about their sexual encounters. Look, bedroom doors were invented for a reason. These are 17-year olds. I don't need to hear all the gory details of whose fingers are going where. ...I'm gonna say it again for good measure: SEVENTEEN-YEAR OLDS.

It's a shame that I power read through the first 2/3 so quickly because the story was engaging, yet it's the uglier remaining third that's leaving such an imprint on my mind. The first part of the book actually had a good premise, familiar but solid. Poor girl with nothing gets plucked from obscurity into a life of riches. I didn't even take issue with the idea that she was stripping when we first meet her, because she's doing it to survive. Can't fault someone for surviving, and she's smart about her work, putting her safety and schooling first. I actually had to pause around page 55 and split a side from laughing. "Four boys who rule the school, and their decree sets the law for how poor-girl Ella will be treated." I've seen this premise before, and lemme tell ya, I LOVE Hana Yori Dango. Downside? The boys in HYD weren't such *complete* a-holes, unlike the Royals, and they actually learned and grew from their experiences in the story. The only redeemable character in this bunch is Easton. He's the only one that makes up for his initial behavior and makes an attempt to be better with Ella. I see so many reviews for this story chittering on about how great all the boys are and I'm like "...Seriously?" Either their standards for men are terrible, or mine are too high. Maybe both? Easton was sweet, Gideon was neutral, and the other three were like "Please go to other side of your mansion house and never interact with Ella again, thank you."

There was ONE saving grace of the distasteful sexual content that I feel warrants a shout out. Mean Girl Savannah, one of Ella's arch nemeses, takes the time to warn her of her potential date rapist (albiet too cryptically for Ella to get it). "Look, I don't like you much, but I wouldn't let even my worst enemy be sucked in by him." She put aside all her issues with Ella to warn her. I 100% support girls looking out for other girls. More of this in the book and less of the boot knocking, and this might have been the story I hoped it was going to be.

I debated with myself at some length whether to round up or down for my site rating. The book was a solid 2.5 stars for me. The book had plenty of enjoyable material (round up), but it also had some really sketchy content (round down). Ultimately I had to ask myself "How much do I want other people reading this story? So I'm rounding down. I hate the idea of a young impressionable girl looking for a proper Young Adult book to find this one instead. Hell, I wouldn't even want a young boy to read this and get any ideas. I feel it's almost my responsibility to do what I can to discourage them both.

Good read but...

I thought this book was a good read. It has good character development, a fast moving plot, and definitely interesting characters. I liked the main character. She was strong, she wasn't perfect and she was insightful regarding how she could be influenced by her history. In fact, I liked that she was aware of her own trauma. The author definitely should have addressed this trauma more, however. It's traumatic for a 15 year old to be taking care of her sick, dying mother, to be working two jobs, to have a history of family violence (or attempted anyway), to have to deal with seeing the aftermath of domestic violence on your mom (before she was sick), to have her mother die, and to be an underage stripper on top of all of that? This brings me to my next question...How was CPS NOT called?? Oh and while we're at it, who in their right mind would believe that a 17 year old is the 35 years that a driver's license states? Nobody. Because even with a boatload of makeup on, you would look too young. But whatever. I can "suspend my disbelief".

I'm not a big fan of the amount of violence and sexual violence that happens in this book. And then to have our girl FALLING for that? I did like that she recognized how screwed up that was...but still! It just...sits wrong with me. But then maybe, because of her past, this is what she's looking for. I did like that this bad boy didn't do a complete turn around. That's wonderful, actually. I mean, we get to see what motivates him (the trauma of losing his own mother--a lot of dead mother's in this book now that I think about it) but he makes no apologies. He just sort of..warms up to our girl.

All in all I'd give it a 3.something. There were flaws but I believe that's the point of it all. Just didn't care for the violence, the dating violence, and the sexual violence.

OH. MY. GOSH.

WOW! I put this book on the back burner for a while because the synopsis just didn't grab my attention, but it had decent reviews so I put it on my wish list and waited. I finally purchased it and read the entire book in one day. I was sucked in! The plot is phenomenal!! It's so much more than a rags to riches story. The characters are so complex and well developed - they each have their own flavor and stand out independently. Ella is a spit fire! I loved her right away. Her devotion to her mother and to herself (getting a good education, supporting herself alone) makes her one of the most likable characters I've read in a long time. Her relationships with the Royal family seemed so real - I could believe that their relationships were based on real life, even though they're completely fictitious. THANK THE LORD that the second book is already out because I would have been stewing in my head until it's release!! Don't be put off by some of the other reviews like I was - this book is fantastic. Well edited, well thought out, believable, lovable - I'd give it ten stars if I could!
