This cookbook vs. others by ATK

I love to shop on Amazon, but it can be a risk to order a brand new cookbook without having a physical copy to browse first. I am an America's Test Kitchen fan and have many of their cookbooks, so I am basically comparing this new cookbook to others by them that I have.

****The book itself: quite heavy for one of their paperback cookbooks. It's got to be at least as heavy as the many of the hardcovers. The binding isn't that great. Although I am super gentle with my cookbooks, I anticipate that this one will have a crack down the spine. [[EDITED TO SAY: The binding must be reinforced better than I thought, because it has not cracked yet. I even opened it to the middle and layed it flat for awhile! What a pleasant surprise. If it does crack down the middle, I will update.]] It's about 450 pages and I don't see any full-page pictures, most are a quarter page or so. Its layout is standard America's Test Kitchen style, with sidebars and boxes that highlight certain techniques and ingredients.

This book is divided into eleven chapters:
Chapter 1--Hearty Vegetable Mains
Chapter 2--Soups, Stews, and Chilis
Chapter 3--Pasta, Noodles, and Dumplings
Chapter 4--Rice and Grains
Chapter 5--Beans and Soy
Chapter 6--Salads Big and Small

Chapter 8--Savory Flatbreads, Pizzas, Tarts, and More
Chapter 9--Sandwiches, Wraps, Burgers, and More
Chapter 10--Eggs for Breakfast and Dinner

Note: The cover states that of the 700 recipes, 250 are vegan and 500 are gluten-free. At the beginning of each chapter, the recipes are listed and identified as vegan, gluten-free or fast (less than 45 minutes from start to finish.) Just scanning through the recipe lists, I see some repeats from other cookbooks in each chapter as well as ones that I don't recognize.

****What I don't like about this cookbook:
--Each recipe begins with a small "Why this recipe works" paragraph. I will confess that I love the long articles written by the recipe developers that are included in the annual ATK editions. The little blurbs at the beginning are disappointing to me. I am not a super chef, so I enjoy reading how the recipe was tested. Then I read through the whole recipe. For me, it is kind of like mental imagery that an athlete might do. So by the time I have gone through all that, I feel as if I'm prepared to cook the recipe. I don't enjoy this mini description as much.
--Many of the recipes sound too adventurous for me (Homemade Tofu, Israeli Couscous with Carmelized Fennel and Spinach, Black-Eyed Pea Salad with Peaches and Pecans). Some people may enjoy these kind of recipes, but I will probably never attempt them. NOTE: this is why I gave the cookbook only four stars.

****What I like about this book:
--I feel like I can count on ATK to deliver a consistent, reliable finished recipe. They have taste-tested and honed the recipe to what they believe is the best it can be. I may not always think a recipe sounds great, but the ones that do sound great to me, usually turn out tasting great to me, too.
--This cookbook includes plenty of helpful sidebars, which I always enjoy going through. The beginning includes a section about prepping vegetables--very handy for people who haven't learned all that yet. (i.e., I had never bought or prepared bok choy until I made a recipe from this cookbook, and the vegetable guide was quite useful to me.)
--I have read complaints about other ATK indices, so to briefly test the index in the back, I looked for "Garlic Mashed Potatoes" under Garlic, Mashed and Potatoes and was able to see an entry for the recipe under each of them.

UPDATE: So far I have tried: smashed potatoes, quinoa and vegetable stew, avocado toast with fried egg, curry-yogurt sauce with cilantro for steamed or roasted veggies, cranberry-orange overnight steel-cut oatmeal, and coconut-rice with bok choy and lime. They all turned out well, with the exception of the curry-yogurt sauce. However, I did use a brand of yogurt that I hate--I think it ruined the whole thing. Lesson learned. My family's favorite so far was the Coconut Rice with Bok Choy and Lime, which I served with chicken breast in Trader Joe's Thai Green Curry Simmer Sauce.

I will update as I cook through the recipes further!

A cookbook even a carnivore can enjoy!

I'm in a mixed marriage ... my husband eats meat, and I'm a vegetarian. We both love America's Test Kitchen and subscribe to Cook's Illustrated, but I've always had to cherry pick the vegetarian recipes among all the (delicious sounding!) carnivorous recipes. We have yet to find a dud among any of the recipes we've tried. I am THRILLED that they have finally created a cookbook that we can both enjoy in its entirety! The recipes are flavorful and reliable enough that he doesn't mind the missing meat (that much...).

Some of the recipes are from the magazine or other cookbooks, but there seems to be many, many new ones. Some of my favorite recipes we've made in the past included in the cookbook are the Chickpea Cakes (SO tasty), Lentils, Rice, and Crispy Onions (Mujaddara), Wild Rice and Mushroom Soup, and Farmhouse Vegetable and Barley Soup. The concentrated Vegetable Broth Base has changed the way we cook ... we can make a batch ahead of time and freeze it. We scoop it out by the tablespoon (it doesn't freeze solid) and add it to soup instead of buying canned vegetable broth.

Some of the recipes I'm really excited to try are the Lavash with Spinach, Tomatoes, and Olives, Sizzling Saigon Crepes (Bahn Xeo), Pupusas with Tangy Cabbage Slaw, and every single one of the soups and stews. I'm also looking forward to trying their recipe for a vegetarian version of fish sauce (and for using it to make their Pad Thai recipe!).

The index is color coded to indicate gluten free, vegan, and "fast" recipes (45 minutes or less). I wish that the recipes had nutritional information, but that's never been a huge emphasis in any the Test Kitchen's products! I love that there isn't any "filler." A lot of vegetarian cookbooks will include recipes for breads, desserts, and other things that will almost always be vegetarian. This cookbook focuses primarily on main dishes, with a few sides, salads, and snacks. I can't wait to find new favorites!

Worth the effort

I had read the reviews regarding the cheap binding on this cookbook, so I wasn't surprised to find the cover had separated from the book before I had even a removed it from the shipping package. But it was a simple task to run to the copy center to remove the spine and have the book spiral bound for $4.00. Cookbooks should be spiral-bound anyway to allow them to lay flat when you're using them. I love the recipes and all the hints in this cookbook, definitely worth the effort.

How to write a review of great book without spoilers? You don't talk about plot, just praise the book.

Short summary:
Colina is growing up (in every meaning of the phrase) and wants to fix everything she believes she messed up.
Legion is at the door and wants chaos.
Darla wants justice and revenge.
Luke and Dean want love and Colina.
(I want Luke.)
Freddy, omg how I love him, wants peace on earth and to help his friends.
Gage wants to rule the world.
Wendy, oh my poor darling Wendy, just wants her place in cruel world.
Mildred wants coffee.

But who will get what they desire most?

Catrina Burgess leads her characters through so many challenges that you are at edge of your seat whole time, gripping table so you don't end up under it.

But the final act... It is just amazing.
It's like watching a diver jump from a cliff, but you don't know if the diver knows there are rocks under the sea surface. You scream to warn him, but it's too late. All you can do now is chew your nails and hope for the best.
Who said females don't like blood, gore, fighting or horror? Oh how i loved those scenes in the castle. The Dark rituals series is faithful to the genre till the end.

End... why does it have to end? I want more of Dark Rituals, much more... at least 5 books more (And Luke. I want Luke).

the poor guy went through hell

Once I finished reading Awakening, I bought the other three and read them back to back. I hope I'm not writing any spoilers, only what you will expect to see.

The people trying to bring forth the legion are out there. You'll learn what about the other experiments were. Just when you thought Wendy went through enough in book 3, you learn what happened to her. The little demon girl has a big role. The resolution of the Colina and Luke's relationship. Personally I was pulling for Luke, the poor guy went through hell. If Colina was a real person, I could have smacked her upside the head for what she put him through in this book. Finally, what was up with Mildred. I went through the gambit and liking and disliking her. By the end, I liked her.

Overall, I really liked Legion. It was a good mix of disturbing, satisfying, and surprising. I think if you've read the other 3, you will like this one too.

An Amazing End to an Amazing Series

This book was amazing! The author did a great job of bringing the series around. Colina has grown so much from the first book and this book showcases so much growth and change. You're able to watch Colinas struggle with lovers as well. Her fear of Luke in Calebs body, her love/not love for Dean, and her forced infatuation of Gage. I loved every minute of this book and hope that one day there will be more! I'm ready to read any book this author publishes!

if you are a new resident physician in radiology or a new specialist radiologist this book will make you wiser and moreover it is fun to read. If you go on call just take it and do not hesitat!

Very good intro to ER bone radiographs

This is a great first book to become familiar with musculoskeletal radiographs. It is great for a radiology resident just starting, an orthopedic resident, ER resident or a medical student wanting to go into one of those fields. The book covers trauma and doesn't cover other chronic bone diseases (degenerative disease, tumors, etc). It does a great job of making it simple, going through a search pattern and providing decent explanations with schematics. It also covers topics specific to pediatrics trauma which is nice. The chapters on chest and abdominal trauma are really an afterthought and don't add a whole lot. Another downside is that sometimes I felt like the drawings/schematics could be clearer, more detailed and higher quality. Overall, the book is a quick read and I definitely recommend it.

This book is amazing! I wish I had it during residency

This book is amazing! I wish I had it during residency. Trying to learn it all now since I have to read my own X-rays at night. I am not a radiologist and finding a good resource to review the basics is challenging. This book is fantastic. Also organized in such a matter I will able to use at work. In an ER if it's not organized well it's impossible your just too busy. Can't wait to learn it all.

Cliffhanger ending!

When I saw that this story had first been published in an anthology with other writers' work--an anthology that is now out of print--I thought it must be a stand-alone short story. But it isn't. It ends on a cliffhanger, with Marchessa in danger and the various wolf packs on the verge of war. Although Marchessa has, by that time, made her choice between Cassius and Antony, her happiness and that of the person she chose is in jeopardy due to the threat to her life. So I was very annoyed to have the story end just like that, with no indication if it will even be continued. I wouldn't have minded if the author had left the outcome of the war still hanging in the balance, but I did want to know that Marchessa would be safe.

This is disappointing because I thought the author wove a very interesting tale. It was unusual and not as straightforward as the usual shifter books where the wolf instantly recognizes its mate and that's it. I found the whole Cassius and Antony thing a little confusing and it could perhaps have used a bit more explanation. Marchessa's dilemma was real because she's drawn to both of them and they each fulfill different needs in her. I loved how Antony insisted on giving her the choice and not forcing her compliance, although he's the Alpha. He also recognizes her strength and respects it, and because of him she is able to experience the freedom she's fought for all her life.

The story is much larger than just the Marchessa and Cassius/Antony love triangle, though, and while this made it even more interesting and unique, it also caused me to become a bit lost as many other characters were introduced and things happened without much backstory. I kept feeling like I was left out of the loop, as if I was supposed to already know stuff which wasn't explicitly mentioned. The Great Council of the wolves and who's allowed to attend or sit on the Council, the six great nations (six largest packs? Or are there only six packs of wolves in the entire world?), the on-going war between the de la Luna pack--Marchessa's father's pack--and the Woolven pack, the hunter Breslin... seriously, so many other characters and events packed into one short story.

I wish the author had chosen to write this as a full-length novel. It would have been awesome in that format because it is such a rich story, much more than a simple shifter romance, and the author could have fully developed her ideas and completed the story. The dissatisfying ending ruined it for me. I looked at her other book, "Big Bad Billionaire" which features the Woolven Alpha's story, and another reviewer mentioned that story ended abruptly too. I'm sad to say I probably won't read other books by this author because I want the satisfaction of having the main plot lines resolved by the end of the story and knowing the pair of lovers are going to be happy together, not in danger of being torn apart like Marchessa and her mate. It's hard because I liked the author's ideas very much and enjoyed most of the story--barring the parts where I was left in the dark due to the aforementioned lack of backstory or world-building.

Don't mess with this Princess!

We first met Marchesa in Big Bad billionaire when she was involved in a Romeo & Juliette type affair with an alpha from another pack. After her brief introduction I am so glad we get to hear her story. She was born into her pack as an Alpha female and has always done what she wanted. When her father trades her hand in marriage for a diamond mine to further his war Marchesa is torn between doing what is right for the pack and what she wants. She never expected to fall for the Alpha. This story is AMAZING!! The storyline follows multiple characters and multiple arcs. There is hot and heavy sex, lust, revenge, and redemption all wrapped up leaving you wanting more and more! Saranna writes kick butt warrior women who know what they want and go after it. I couldn't put this book down!

A Great new read!!!

When I started to read this book I Really did not like the main girl but she slowly grew and I started to enjoy her and the writing style of this author. Now, this group of books is brand new to me as is the author. But in no way did that take away from this story. I was never lost with the story line.

It was fast paced, action packed with lots of great detailed scenes that convinced me this was worth my time to read. It has really smooth transition from one scene to the next.

Very nice detail and what sex there is in the book is not over the top or written in a way to throw you off from the main story plot. I have to say this is a nice change from other books I have read.

Ryan Kingslien is the founder of www.zbrushworkshops.com. Great book on Zbrush, but not for newbies.

For those wanting to improve on modeling human characters, this is a must-have reference, but this is not the book to pick up if you are new to the concept of digital sculpting, the ZBrush UI or the topic of retopology. To be clear, I am not beginner to sculpting or ZBrush, but Mr. Kingslien is going at a certain pace and on more than a few occasions, details on how he got from point A to B are not always present. If you know how Zbrush works, you can figure it out, but keep in mind time has passed since this book came out and versions of ZBrush have come and gone. Meaning some menus and options have been combined with others and no longer exist. Here a newbie will probably end up pulling their hair out looking for settings they will never find. This is not to say this is not a good book, but for me the definitive book on anatomy, retopology and projection is still Scott Spencer's Digital Sculpting Human Anatomy. Think of this as a nice companion to the topics Mr. Spencer introduced; particularly because this book focuses solely on a female character, not a male. The reasons I will not part with my copy are for the nifty shortcuts to sculpting folds and alternate ways to texture/paint skin and clothing. His approach to modeling he human face and how to generate pores are also very useful.

Great book for Character Creation in Z-brush!

I've watched some of Ryan Kingslien's Gnomon video's and other tutorials. I really wanted a handy reference on character creation in z-brush. I personally prefer books to tutorials since I constantly find myself rewinding the same parts over and over. This book is exactly like his video's, only in book form, going through his process step by step from start to finish to create a character primarily in Z-brush. I find myself going to this book over some of the other z-brush books I've bought over the years.

It's important to point out 2 things. First, this is not a beginners book. If that's what your looking for, try Eric Keller's Intro to Z-brush 4 book. Second, it's not a Z-Brush anatomy book per-say, if that's what your looking for, try Scott Spencer's ZBrush Digital Sculpting Human Anatomy book, which is also not for beginners.

That being said, the great thing I found with this book was the disc of content included. Since it is common for z-brush pro's to move back and forth between other 3d apps, like but not limited to Maya and 3d Max this book contained files that are ready to go in z-brush or .obj files that can be brought into other 3d apps. In the book, When he mentions another application like Maya, he tells you where on the disc to find the files if you don't have access to Maya and where to go in the book and what to skip. Which I personally found to be very helpful and a time saver. It also has brushes and other files that can be used in z-brush that Ryan Kingslien uses in his own work. Not to mention the disc includes some video tutorials as-well.

Kingslien has worked for Z-brush and has been paramount in the advancements of the software over the years. One thing that I noticed is that he tends to start out at a higher sub divisions then many other Z-brush pros. This may cause problems for new users as it's recommended that you start with very low topology and work your way up as Z-brush is very ram intensive. One other small problem, this book is marketed as a "Game" book, and it really seems to be more aimed at creating characters where polygon count is not an issue, like film. However, if your new to Z-brush, this polygon count issue is pretty much nullified with the creation of a plug in called Decimation Master which is free from pixologic.com

Ryan Kingslien is the man

If you are new to zbrush or a pro i doubt you have gone your yrs without knowing this mans name he is masterful in his craft and an excellent teacher i know some reviews of this book say he expects you to know zbrush and this isnt a step by step tutorial book that it is not but at the same time picking up this book means you have some knowledge of 2d and would like to expand further that being said ryan is an excellent teacher for doing so i find his instructions to be clear and easily understood and he also shows an approach to character modeling solely in z-brush (since he prefers that medium he sticks with it) but not to say he doesn't teach you the basics he goes through the process of creating a base mesh inside of maya which can also be transferred practices to other 3d applications and aside from the content in the book he packed on the CD an introduction to zbrush sculpting which was a class in itself at one point he teaches you the basics of zbrush and the brushes along with hot keys and personal preferences for custom UI alphas etc my review would be a 5 star if there where more videos on the CD to kind of coincide with the book or bypass it as some of us learn rather from doing than reading and copying (since i am that way) it took some getting used to but all in all this is a solid resource for anyone interested in this type of work. (he also teaches anatomy as a bonus i.e. names placement etc.)

About the Author
After growing up with lack I became successful at the age of 23 owning my own restaurant and nightclub. I eventually sabotaged myself because I was unsuccessful internally. I became addicted to drugs and lost everything. I was nearly homeless in 2011, had no money or even a car and in January of 2012 I had a profound spiritual experience where I connected to the oneness of all life. I was left with a deep sense of unconditional love for everything and everyone. I went into deep meditation for almost 4 years and wrote the insights and realizations that came to me during that time. I rebuilt my life from the inside out and am now in the top 7% in my industry. I got back 10 times the material things but more importantly am enjoying deep, loving relationships in my life.

For everyone who is looking for inner peace

This book is written in such a way that it actually doesn't leave you a choice but to read it slowly, make multiple re-reads of many parts and to really go deep inside you and question yourself. What I like about this book is that the author shares his life story and his path to enlightenment. It is not written just for the sake of having a book written, it is a true story with a deep meaning. He talks about his experience of enlightenment. Well, I experienced it couple of years ago, but it has never returned. Since then I am trying to get it back. I think this book is what I was looking for to help me experience it once again and to never ever let it go.

I really enjoyed this read - I'm very much into personal growth and this is in tune with a lot I have learned from Tony Robbins, and Corey visits some fresh new concepts too. I love the idea of living consciously versus unconsciously and in a proactive state rather than a reactive state. We live such busy and hectic lives these days, yet are unproductive because we're in reactive mode most of the time. Corey includes exercises to do at the end of each section too which is really useful. I highly recommend a read!
