Honest Review

I was really taken with the first book in this series that really was a journey down the rabbit hole that messed with your head and which you really do need to read to understand this second book. I have been really looking forward to this next installment to see how the characters all fared. While the story wasn’t as mind blowing as book one now that I understand the procedure that takes Jane "in", Tara still delivers a complex and gut-wrenching story.
We are once again sucked into the complexity of Jane’s mind from the off as we find her in the middle of one of her ‘mind visits’ and once again she is sucked into a maze of indicators to try and piece together the puzzle. And what a dark twisted puzzle this is, Jane is trying to piece together what happened to Ashley a young girl found on the brink of death on a frozen river shore. Her story is disturbing even to read and leaves Jane reeling from its impact.
Jane can’t let Ashley’s story go and is determined to find the person responsible for the things she learned during the mind visit but life suddenly becomes as complicated in reality for her. Her relationship with Dash takes an unexpected turn and suddenly her partner also appears to not be who she thought. The case keeps taking deeper and deeper twists and becomes bigger than Jane ever imagined. Can Jane work through the clues to find justice for Ashley?
This is a great series that has a superb main female lead in Jane who is an elite army officer. It is complex and really sucks you into each story and I am once again looking forward to the next book in this series.

Ah-freaking-mazing!

I was so excited to dive back in to this crazy mind bending world with Jane! What crazy crap are we going to experience with her this time! I didn’t think it could get more horrifying then Blood and Bone. I laugh now, this is Tara freaking Brown we are talking about here! This woman’s mind is crazy scary LOL Right off the back you start the book in confusion until you realize Jane is in a mind jump. TB still manages to keep us confused, guessing and on our toes even though we now know this crazy game of mind jumping Jane plays. And as terrible as things are, because let’s face it, Jane is only involved in the worst of the worst cases, you still find moments of pure happiness and hysterical banter mixed throughout. We get to see a new side of Jane here too, a little bit of a softer side. We get to delve into her brain a little and see why she does what she does in the mind jumps and how smart her little brain is at putting the puzzle pieces together. The depth of the story that unfolds here is very intense! I can’t wait to read it again so I can that much more of the little clues hidden throughout. My husband is even sucked in and obsessed with this story and is upset he has to wait so long for the next book! :D

My first thought was, "Is this one better than book 1, or just as good?"

I'm still deciding on that one.

But seriously, after everything made sense at the end of book 1, book 2 is easier to follow. Oh, don't get me wrong, it's still mind-blowing and mind-boggling, and it still has you guessing and second-guessing everything.

So, Jane is Jane whenever she's not analyzing patients, victims that are in a coma. When she's not hunting down psychos, she's a woman that has a hot doctor for a fiance, one that loves her and would die for her. I have to tell you, Dash/Derek has stolen my heart, that perfect British bastard.

But nothing is as it seems. Both in Jane's professional and personal life. Who's the psycho that did gruesome and horrible things to eleven girls, how did it all start and is it someone Jane knows? Plus, what secrets does Dash/Derek keep from Jane? Who is he, really?

I am so going to reread both of these books, before the third and last one is out! Loved it. Brilliant x2. 5 stars.

Charles Swindoll does it again with his `Living the Psalms'. Admittedly not all of the Psalms, as it would take 4-5 volumes to examine them all to this depth, for he does dive deep.
He goes through Psalms # 1, 5, 8, 13,15, 19, 23, 26, 27, 32, 42+43, 46, 54, 63, 91, 100, 101, 116, 119, 127+128, 131, 137, 139 (twice), 142, and 149.
He does this to give a look in depth to how each Psalm he looks at covers: compromise, being overlooked, despondency, weakened integrity, divine silence, uncertainty, mistreatment, fear, unforgiving conscience, turmoil, personal weakness, difficult people, ritual religion, enemy attack, ingratitude, aimlessness, sorrow, grief, low enthusiasm, family life, impatient arrogance, lingering consequences, insignificance, insecurity, depression, and praiseless times. In short, the table of contents alone is enough to put a minor manic depressive like me into a tailspin.
But worry not! For this is a study on the Psalms to, if not end your bad or low mood, certainly carry you through it to the other side. Charles doesn't have adepressing bone in his body, and really lifts you out of your slog of despair.
Each chapter is divided into seven lessons, so you can take a short section (a day) over 26 weeks. Oddly most weeks seem to only have 5 lessons. Apparently you are given the weekend off.
Each chapter goes into depth on what the Hebrew really says. (In Psalm 1 Blessed actually means abundantly happy). Every Psalm is broken down into outlines, that really bring out the form of the Hebrew poetry (nothing resembling English poetic form), contrasts, repetitions that build a point, and other things you can learn. Like how a gitteth means a sad sorry sounding oboe like instrument, used to accompany sad sorry sounding psalms.
Under Charles' tutelage, you will not be bummed out by the bummer Psalms!

I am a big fan of Chuck Swindoll, however for those who have (like me) Books I and II of "Living Beyond the Daily Grind" which contains meditations on selected Psalms and Proverbs, this is a re-publishing of the Psalms portion of those books. Still great stuff, but not new.

I may not show up as a verified purchaser because I may have bought it from Chas' website, so don't hold it against me... This is one of my favorite reads that I pick up and read my highlights time after time... I always enjoyed preachers that can take what makes absolutely no sense to me in the scriptures, and put it to real life living today... Great explanations of some great Psalms. I liked it so well, I ordered some extra copies for Christmas presents or just for someone that looks like they could use one... Do not hesitate to order 2 or 3, you will want to pass it around... I recently had two back operations that have kept me close to my recliner. Plenty of time to read and reflect on the teachings in this book... What better than Psalms to get you through a situation... made my stay in the recliner much more endurable......

Theory Construction

As a beginning researcher in medicine, I was quite surprised to find that medicine is considered an atheoretical science. Perhaps I missed a few classes along the way, but as a family physician, I thought I understood theory and theory development. That was until I really started thinking about it. After asking several researchers, mentors, and general queries to other physicians about theory development, I was left with the following: "This is very, very important, but I can't tell you how to start."
Strategies for Theory Construction in Nursing is a well written, easy to read book that gives a basic underpinning to theory development. It is the first book on this topic that I could easily understand. Concepts, statements and theories are developed through analysis, synthesis and derivation. This book, with examples, offers a step-by-step approach to development. It is well worth your time.

If you are a student in an MPhil/PhD program and have to do concept analysis, then this is a must have. Walker and Avant simplified the Wilsonian method. I followed the book and did a great job in my coursework and then in the conceptual and operational definition of the variables for my research proposal.

About the Author

Kurt Lancaster earned his PhD from New York University and has shot documentaries that have screened nationally and internationally. He is the author of DSLR Cinema and has consulted for the Pulitzer Prize winning newspaper, The Christian Science Monitor, training their print journalists in video journalism, and he has shot and edited documentary journalism pieces. He is an associate professor of digital filmmaking in the School of Communication at Northern Arizona University, where he teaches courses on documentary and multimedia journalism.

Repetitive, and points you towards blogs for the really useful information.

This book reads more like marketing materials than being an actual helpful textbook. While some of the story of how certain camera's came to market is interesting, it's largely repetitive and includes rambling interviews with filmmakers who all repeat many of the same things as each other. Everyone seems to think these camera's are "full of intangible filmic qualities," a phrase I started to skim. The sample images don't always demonstrate what the description claims they demonstrate, and are too small when they do, and the book wanders off on tangents that don't support actually helping a fiilmmaker understand the benefits of shooting on a RAW camera. The very helpful chapters are mostly lifted from other peoples blog posts, and while credit is given, it leaves you wondering why you are reading it in a book when you could just go to the blog and see embedded video clips along with the article.

A History of Raw Cameras

Very interesting book covering the advances in raw cinema cameras over the last few years.

I was a little disappointed. I thought that it would discus color grading from log perspective. It does talk about grading but only in a very general way. Certainly not an in depth color grading manual. More so a history textbook.

A great read though, especially if you are new to raw 12 bit cameras.

But if your looking for color grading theory, check out books by Alexis Van Hurkman.

This book is worth the read.

Very good book. It reads allot like a digital billed sales brochure, however, it did sell me on the camera. I own 2 BMCC 2.5K cameras and 1 Blackmagic Pocket Camera and this book helped me gain more confidence in my choice of using these cameras. The RAW power is what I've wanted to harness more and this book was more confirmation and a guide for going forward with CinemaDNG, rather than worrying about needing to buy or rent a RED or an Alexa to get the results in wanting when the budgets I'm working with don't really support the cost of those cameras. Now after reading the book, I'm even more convinced that the CinemaDNG format may yield better results for larger budget projects than other ULTRA HD formats. And, the Digital Bolex cameras are definitely on my radar now.
This is a great book for novice and pro. It has something everyone can use and the ebook is great because it offers direct links to sample videos and interviews.
