About the Author

Jonathon Scott Payne is a retired US Air Force officer who is currently employed as an engineer for the US Army. He earned his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Alabama in Birmingham and his master’s degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Florida. In 1992, he graduated from the US Air Force Test Pilot School as a flight test engineer.

Payne served three years with the Canadian Forces during his time in the US Air Force, has flown more than thirty-five types of military and civilian aircraft, and has logged over sixty extremely hazardous flight test missions.

He and his wife live in Madison, Alabama, where they enjoy riding their Harley-Davidson motorcycles and looking after the most spoiled rotten cats in the entire world—and they wouldn’t have it any other way.

This is a heart warming special read

I was asked to review this book by the author. I edited the book, thus it will not show that I have purchased this from Amazon.

I am amazed at the quality of writing Jonny has put into his first book. This is a story about Jonny and his VERY interesting life and career, his family, his cats, and his very special cat, Mighty Little Man. I believe that men and women will both find it very interesting reading and any animal lover will be crying and laughing right along with those of us who had any part in putting this together.

I can honestly say that I observed Jonny's heart and soul went into every word and I look forward to seeing more from this author. I hope he will take a deep breath and plunge into more writing.

A cat with personality!

For anyone who shares their home with animals, this book will make them laugh, cry, and nod their head in understanding. It truly is Jonny's story, Little Man's story, their story. As the tale unfolds, we discover Jonny's interesting history and follow the development of his lifelong love and compassion for animals. We become part of the family. And then Little Man joins the tale... and takes over the story.

We share the ups and downs of Jonny's journey with a special cat, Little Man. For those who think cats have no personality, I challenge you to read this book without a change of heart! Little Man is quite the character! Jonny's tells the stories so many of us can understand, stories that highlight the human-animal bond and the joy it brings. Our lives are enriched through the pets who share our homes, Little Man and Jonny illustrate that perfectly. I look forward to following the story of Little Man and wish him (and Jonny) all the best!

True Animal Lover

If ever I were any type of animal, I would certainly want Jonny and his family to be my owner. I have no doubt that I would have the best care that any animal could ever have. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this story written by my old high school friend - Jonny and I go back to junior high through graduation from high school. There were many parts of his story that I knew before reading this book and a whole lot more that I did not know. I have never been a "cat person" and rest assured I am still not, but this story is touching and truly amazing. Thank you, Jonny, for sharing this with all of your readers. You are truly an inspiration to animal lovers and the epitome of "don't ever give up."

The goal of this book is to dispel the fear and teach sushi lovers how it's done, using 625 color photos and step-by-step instructions. It includes a brief history of sushi; a description of the tools and ingredients required; tips on buying, storing and butchering fish; and a comprehensive how-to section for sashimi and sushi. The authors explain how to make sushi rice, what knives to use, how to clean a bamboo roller, and how to prevent sticky rice from sticking to your hands. One of the best cookbooks for teaching I have ever seen, with excellent recipes and results

We love sushi, and sashimi. Sashimi is the raw fish, sushi is basically the rice, you can make sushi without raw fish. Although Jim and I, and the sons, are all good cooks, Japanese food can be intimidating. What is first dashi, why does my sushi rice taste so wrong, why don't my knives cut smoothly instead of butchering the roll?

The complete guide to sushi and sashimi is an impressive book, but it breaks down each step, discusses ingredients, techniques, equipment, to the point it's very doable. I had noticed our local Whole Foods had started carrying sushi grade sashimi (fish) and have been wanting to try different sushi making at home, and now I have!

The book is broken down into parts:

Part 1 The basics

this includes things like the story of sushi, different soy sauces, dashi, cutting techniques, pickles, equipment, knives and so on.

Part one also includes a very informative part on the fish and seafood
This includes how to buy, how to store, cleaning, filleting, etc

Part 2: Sashimi

This is mostly on how to cut the fish and squid and get it ready to use and/or serve

Part 3: Sushi

This has the rice recipe, different rolls and presentations etc

The book is spiral bound, which is great because, more than just a cook book, this is a teaching and technique book. It's hard to follow along I'm fighting with the book to stay open. But this book opens wide and has absolutely fabulous pictures to follow along with, very very detailed pictures that clearly illustrate how to perform the specific recipe or technique.

The recipes are great. Sushi rolls sometimes vary depending on locale, or even from restaurant to restaurant across the city. Still, I find the recipes familiar and the ones I want to make. From the common California roll to Chirashi (scattered sashimi, one of my favorites) and even a vegetarian Chirashi! Sushi rice to dragon roll.

This is a fabulous book, which accomplishes the goals of great recipes and great teaching. Here you will learn the knife skills, including which knives to buy, rice making skills, filleting skills, from the rice to the finished product the recipes are clearly explained.

Now, this is a specialized book, so you will need a source or Japanese ingredients for some recipes, however, many of the basic types can be found in most stores or Asian markets. I know our local grocery stores have rice wine, rice vinegar, seaweed, wasabi etc.

This book is simply wonderful and I highly recommend it if you want a personalized at home sushi/sashimi cooking school

Excellent resource!

Making sushi for dinner is something I regularly do. And what I mean by that is, basically I make various versions of California Rolls, and that’s about it. As far as I can tell, this is basically a sushi chef textbook — as it seems to teach just about everything a professional sushi chef would need to know. Yet, authors Elliot and Cook make these skills accessible to anyone in their beautiful and lavishly photographed book. Every style of sushi is laid out, step-by-step, showing how to make all the big sellers, in every conceivable style. Sashimi? Check. Sushi-in-a-bowl (Chirashi)? Check. Those little sushi-cup-things (Gunkanmaki)? Check. Pressed and stuffed sushi (Oshizushi and Inarizushi)? Check. California Roll? Spicy Tuna Roll? Tempura Shrimp Roll? Spider Roll? Dragon Roll? Rainbow Roll? All of our favorites are here and accounted for, along with many more, each shown step-by-step with a photo and explanatory text. There is also extensive info on all the various sauces, accompaniments, knives, and different fishes, along with how to prepare them in detail. Everything is presented so clearly and in such a straightforward manner that anyone could learn how (even me), alongside numerous helpful sidebars and explanations. And it’s all actually really simple, once I saw it laid out like this. My whole family is thrilled with my broadening sushi skills, including me.

Very detailed instructional sushi cookbook, that will make you crave the stuff just reading the book.

Strange that it's not two Japanese or Korean authors of this book, but these guys seem to know their stuff pretty well. Lots of nice photos and some things I don't always see in other smaller Sushi guides. Now, I don't eat Sashimi as a rule, I'm sampled some Ahi tuna that was seared and very rare, but I don't like to take chances with parasites. I do however make sushi, but my animal or fish ingredients are cooked or cured in some way. They describe in the book not just the basic rolling techniques, but what kind or size of roll. How large a sheet of toasted seaweed to use, and how Sushi Chef's are first trained. They describe making inner and outer type of rolls, and how to dress up the sashimi. I especially loved the recipe for making the eel sauce. I don't know where it came from the restaurant they worked in or what, and it takes an annoyingly long time to prepare, simmering for an hour while making sure the mixture doesn't burn by using a pastry brush on the pan sides. The sauce was delicious or "oishii ryouri" which means roughly delicious food in Japanese. I used it with some pan fried dumplings since I did not have any eel on hand to grill, and it went well with them.

The book itself is "comb bound" on the inside, a somewhat strange combination of a hard cover outer book, and a "comb bound" interior so the pages will turn and stay in place when you do the recipes. I find most good cookbooks are like this, or use three or five ring binders to remove or insert pages. You can do that as well with a comb binding, but you have to have the device to properly open the comb. The book teaches cooking techniques, knife techniques, proper equipment selection and more importantly if you do sashimi, how to prepare the fish.

My Japanese teacher showed us an easy way to prepare outer rice sushi using the interior of cereal box bags after they are empty. Waxed paper works the same way, and the book here describes the technique as being better or making sushi that will keep in the refrigerator for a day or so. They are right here, I've made toasted nori (seaweed) outer traditional methods and besides not tasting the same, when chilled it often splits the thin nori outer part. Better sushi folk than me make it for the grocery so it seems to hold up better, but it does not taste the same when chilled.

I was surprised at some of the knife techniques, and although I have two sashimi knives from Japan, I've typically used them improperly. Plus, I guess I need a different type of knife for cutting the sushi roll properly, but cutting correctly would have helped me in the past. Apparently, just a barely wet, not soaked knife like I tried to use, and an smooth motion will cut the roll without ripping it apart or sticking so much. The authors also have a knife techniques book, but I'm not skilled enough to tackle that one yet.

This book has enough detail and instruction to help you make all your favorites, but keep you from making the rookie mistakes that ruin the presentation. This book is presented much better than the sushi book by Jiro Ono, he is the Japanese sushi chef who has been perfecting his craft for several decades. A movie on Netflix until recently called Jiro, Dreams of Sushi showed the extraordinary effort he goes through to make it a special event, although, not quite affordable for most, he charges several hundred for a meal in a small shop in Japan. If he revealed more of his personal secrets, I'd get his book too, but this one is the one to get, especially if you're just learning. Recommended for those new to making sushi and even some veterans who want to do the more exotic rolls.

needs work

This M/M fantasy novella, presumably the first instalment in a series, has flaws and strong points.

What I mostly missed is the scope, the wide narrative breadth that is so typical of successful "sword and sorcery"s. This author often appears to be in a hurry: she does not take her time with her settings and her dialogues; she does not make the most of her situations; she does not develop her plot to its full potential.
This might appear minor, but it detract from the overall narrative tension.
In a fantasy, details are essential to the whole: they help the reader to suspend disbelief; they give true depth to plot and characters. Ms Delecour seems to realise that something is wrong and tries to make up for it by introducing short paragraphs that give insight into her characters' psychologies and explain the point she is trying to make, but this device is dissatisfying and ends by making it clearer that something else is missing.

On the other hand, this novella manages to entertain all the same:
there are some nice action scenes; there are good dialogues; there is a decent intrigue and characters are likeable. It really needed more pages, though.

I loved it!

I completely loved this book; the characters, the plot, the world, everything. It was full of adventure, mystery, and a far share of flirting and banter between the two main characters. I couldn't put it down and I am eagerly awaiting the next book that Delecour writes.

Difficult English, tears, and laughter

The book was well written, though partly uses “old English” (the best, quickest example being the word daemon = demon) and for that it was slightly harder to read than was necessary, but on the other hand the style suited the book well.

The beginning of the book didn’t suck me in immediately, but very soon thereafter I was quite invested in it, and I didn’t put the book down for much else besides sleeping and eating. The book both moved me to tears and made me laugh, loudly. I think that the characters were well written, they were deep and believably human.

Most of the book happens in the span of two weeks, and based on that, one could say that the development of the romantic relationship was fast; but while reading the book there is so much going on at once that the progress is agonizingly slow. However through common hardships I thought the relationship developed naturally in the span of a few days, and the rate of progress did create a great anticipation for the ending of the book. I mean to say that for this book the romance aspect was more like a spice, it wasn’t everything. This book has a story to tell besides the romance.

The book also illustrated humanity well, in the worst sense of the word “humanity”. I dislike reading about it, but it also told of the author’s good understanding of the human nature. For this book, I suppose it was a necessary evil.

you absolutely will not regret buying this book and if you do then you're dumb

I never write reviews for products, so this is a first but I felt some weird sort of obligation to do this. I've been admiring Bo Burnham's work for a few months now, so I'm not a super dedicated, long term fan by any means. I found a few of his standup videos a couple months ago and was so impressed by the depth of his comedy and even more so by the fact that he's in his early 20s. I find that people give him grief for being young and for coming from the internet but if you actually listen to his comedy, you can tell that it's very well thought out and that he's a very smart person, well beyond his years. So I bought the book, expecting it to be hilarious and well thought out, and thats exactly what it is. What impresses me the most is the variation that exists between the poems, not all of them are going to make you laugh. Some of them are pretty deep, and deal with serious issues and what I love is that he doesn't try to make you laugh every second you are reading it. He reaches this amazing level of introspection that is so palpable and relatable (at least for me) that blows my mind. That being said, you will laugh when you read this book. There are plenty of poems that had me doubled over in intense laughter. Bo's very talented and very dedicated, and I can't wait to see what he comes up with next, whatever it is I trust it will be spectacular. So basically, buy the book (it's good).

Perfectly balanced book of poetry

I absolutely love this book. I'd like to think that my personal bias for Bo Burnham (following and adoring his comedy since the youtube days) doesn't have anything to do with my recommendation for anyone and everyone to get a hold of a copy of this book.

The balance between silly, laugh-out-loud funny, disturbing, and good poetry is astonishing. Even some of the disturbing or silly poetry contains excellent use of literary devices such as alliteration, rhyming, irony, satire, etc.

I think it is inevitable that a comparison between "Egghead" and Shell Silverstein books will be drawn. Whether you think Silverstein is better because he is a true poet and not a comedian with a poetry book or not, it can't be denied that there is an uncanny resemblance between the two. The works have many similar qualities (writing style and illustration) and are both excellent works of poetry. However, what's special about Bo's book is that it's dirtier and more appropriate for an older age. The description in the information is really very true, "...book that will make you think, laugh and think, 'why did I just laugh?'"

And lastly, the illustration puts the book over the top for me. Each drawing is so detailed and well done, and really adds something to the book. I have very high praise for Chance Bone. And of course for Bo, for once again being so incredibly talented.

You can't put this book down - It just grabs YOU - 5 STARS !!!!!

As a reader you can never really explain it, but a truly great author can make anything come alive while others will put you to sleep. Steve Coll is a Pulitzer Prize winner author of Ghost Wars - the Secret History of the CIA, which is another book you just can't put down. Private Empire is special, and the title is so appropriate, a company that has been in business for over a 100 years. It has seen 19 American Presidents come and go, and yet it remains the dominant energy company in the world, and this book covers the whole story.

There is very little devoted to the early history of the company. As we all probably know John D. Rockefeller created the Standard Oil Trust and when it was broken up by the Trust Busters in the early 20th century, one of the spin-offs was the early ancestor to what is now Exxon which eventually combined with Mobil Oil to form ExxonMobil. Rockefeller controlled 14% of the American economy at one point, and oil has remained our dominant energy source ever since.

What a book, what a story for Exxon is the tale of 20th century America and our country's rise to both prominence and dominance in the world both politically and economically. A company so powerful that it considers itself in many ways a state within a state with an internal security force the equivalent of the Secret Service that guards our President. And why not, Exxon has recruited the best of the retired Secret Service agents to develop, install, and maintain a security shield around this company's behavior and its employees.

The book devotes a chapter to the kidnapping and death of Exxon executive Sidney Reso and how CEO Lee Raymond completely revamped the entire company to ensure that it would not happen again. COMPOSITION of the Book

This tome is over 700 pages spread over 28 chapters with extensive use of footnotes. It is separated into two parts, the first 14 chapters or part I is The End of Easy Oil, while Part II is The Risk Cycle which covers 14 additional chapters.

To truly cover the history of Exxon from the beginning, you would need 1500 to 2000 pages, so the author decided to begin with the Exxon Valdez tragedy. In March of 1989, an Exxon oil tanker traveling through Prince Edward Sound went aground and created an environmental and public relations nightmare for Exxon. The story is covered in detail and the book clearly demonstrates how Lee Raymond who would become CEO in the future used the tragedy to essentially completely revamp Exxon's corporate structure and behavior.

The author also wisely decided to use Lee Raymond as the point man or cornerstone of this book. We see Exxon through Raymond's eyes, and as Raymond says in the book, we see governments come and go. This is an acknowledgment that Exxon thinks and plans for decades at a time, not years.

CONCLUSION

Yes, it is all here. If you are into business biographies, this one is tops. If you are into geopolitical power and how corporations interact with governments including their own government this book is an eye-opener. If you want to get a real feel for what it's like for tens of thousands of people to dedicate themselves to the optimal running of a corporation and very little else, this book may turn you on or turn you off.

Exxon is a demanding master for those who serve, and for those who serve willingly, it makes them rich, and materially they want for nothing. Yes the corporation will absorb your soul and ask everything of you. This is all the more interesting when you consider that all the top people in this company seem to be cut from the same cloth meaning the same religious belief systems, basically Southern colleges, and political beliefs - no left wing partisans need to submit a resume. You simply would not pass the background check.

This reader thought the two chapter headings that best describe the Exxon culture were Chapter 4 - Do you really want us as an enemy, and Chapter 17 I pray for Exxon. The best line in the book was a sentence where Exxon's attitude is described as F_ _ _ you - no apologies, oil is here to stay. This is truly a great read. You don't want to miss it, and you will understand much more about oil, lobbyists, how our government works, and energy that you could have ever possibly wanted to know. Get it today.

A Nuanced Look at ExxonMobil

A Pulitzer Prize winning New Yorker author writes a vast book about the largest corporation in the United States. You can picture the book, you say. Long on research, including large numbers of interviews with people who refuse to be quoted by name? Yes. Engaging distillation of technical information into a readily understood summary? Yes. Characters and scenes drawn with a cinematic vividness? Yes. Revelations that require the reader to rethink his or her basic understanding of the book's subject? Well no.

I spent most of the book's 700 pages waiting for The Revelation. The Secret. The...well, anything. This is certainly more the fault of my expectations than any deficiency in the book. But it is odd that the author would have spent such a huge amount of time and energy writing such a detailed book about two decades of ExxonMobil corporate history without a central theme. Maybe I have simply read too many books about the oil industry and spend too much of life reading business newspapers and magazines, but the general tale told in this book is very well known. What is less well known is the details of the various strands of the story, and those strands are told with exquisite detail, well supported by copious footnotes, even though many (most?) of the cited interviews fail to name the individuals cited.

The book starts crisply with a factual description of the hours leading to the Exxon Valdez disaster and ends two decades later with BP's Deepwater Horizon fiasco. In between we are given an inside look at the corporate culture and operating environment of ExxonMobil. The book consists almost entirely of dozens of intimate scenes. Retreats where Exxon executives uneasily spend days with environmentalists, descriptions of the compounds in Chad where ExxonMobil contractors and employees are barricaded behind thick walls as government security forces ward off locals wanting everything from jobs to equipment to kidnapping.

The author accomplishes several feats in this book, among those are his ability to stitch together disparate scenes to create a three-dimensional view of the world in which Exxon operates, and to coherently present the issues and personalities in all of their complexities.

While Exxon has three divisions: chemicals, upstream (oil and gas exploration and production) and downstream (refining and the gasoline station companies), the real money, the high returns are in the upstream division. Increasingly, new oil and gas reserves available for "ownership" by private companies like ExxonMobil, are in difficult places. Geologically difficult in places such as the Arctic and politically difficult in places such as Chad and Nigeria. Each of these difficulties is explained by giving us a detailed picture of the people, issues and places in which Exxon has been maneuvering over the last 20 years.

But the real triumph of this book is in the endless subtlety of the issues and people presented. Take Chad for example. Human rights and development advocates have argued for some time that it is inappropriate for a company to simply negotiate for the ownership of a country's natural resources with the ruler of that country. The result is often a country that decades later is in worse shape economically than before the contract was signed. A few individuals surrounding the ruler become obscenely wealthy, but that wealth does nothing for the country as a while. ExxonMobil was old school in this and many other matters. Executives were certain that by universally applying a rigorously developed set of rules set down in binders developed over years in the company's Texas headquarters that problems could be reduced to a minimum. It complied with applicable US and foreign laws, but refused to involve itself in the countries or communities where it did business. It paid government agencies to provide security for its facilities and personnel, but was not particularly concerned about how these forces protected these assets. This rigidity did not necessarily serve the company well, and when it negotiated a large contract with Chad it took a completely new route and required that all revenues be under the control of the World Bank, supposedly assuring that the funds would aid the country as a while, not just the ruling elite. This was not easy to negotiate for ExxonMobil, and the author gives us enough detail to see the interests of the various parties, and the effort required by ExxonMobil to accomplish this more "enlightened" approach to resource contracts. But this experiment failed, failed rather miserably, and you get a sense of why ExxonMobil preferred to keep things simple. Use a single model and keep to it.

The nuances of the book are most clearly at play when the author describes Lee Raymond, the Chairman during most of the time covered by the book. Conservative, short-tempered and unable to suffer fools without disdain, he was notoriously opposed to the very idea that climate change existed, let alone that it was a problem. But the author clearly respects the attention to detail and integrity of Mr. Raymond, and his nuanced and detailed portrayal of him echoes his portrayal of the company. If you are interested in an inside look at the world in which ExxonMobil has operated since the Valdez disaster, this is the book. If, on the other hand, you are looking for an expose, a smoking gun, you will need to keep looking.

Well Written, Very Interesting

This was a door stopper of a book. I haven't had a real hefty book for a bit and it was a real delight to sit and hold a real solid book again. And what a book it was. Starting with the the Exxon Valdez spill and book-ending with the Deepwater Horizon disaster Private Empire details the arrogance that is ExxonMobil.

Mr. Coll's writing style is easy even when explaining oil extraction methods or the geopolitics of oil and natural gas rights. It reads almost like a suspense novel except that it's all true. And that is what makes it so scary. I found myself turning page after page reeling at my naivete. I think I want to go back to being uninformed. It's a happier state of mind.

Mr. Coll's research for the book was quite extensive and the book is heavily footnoted. He conducted over 400 interviews with people great and small and he weaves what they shared together with facts gathered from all over the world to take the reader on a ride from oil fields to the offices of political power in this country and beyond. It was utterly fascinating to get a peak inside the Borg like culture of Exxon. Tow the company line or find another job.

I have not enjoyed a non fiction book this much in a long, long time. I just wish I wasn't so surprised at what I learned.

Very useful! I recommend it to every woman.

As women, we are raised to be accommodating to people in need, to say yes when asked for a favor whenever possible, to always try to be helpful... There are so many people who exploit that and even though we see it, we find it hard to stop it. Reading this short ebook has helped me a lot. It gave me some great ideas and pointers and I feel I'm better able to say no now. Gone are the "internal freak-outs" over having to disappoint a family member or leaving a friend hanging. Her breathing exercise work like a charm and eliminate that feeling of guilt and anxiety. I love her EDC method and will continue to use it.

I usually would not rate an ebook this short as 5*, because most are thinly veiled advertisements for the author's services, but this book actually delivers. Charlene Richards is knowledgeable, she comes off as down-to-earth and she knows how to drive her point home in a clear, simple manner. I definitely recommend reading it!

This book is for women, like me, who are often "voluntold" to say yes to commitments that they would rather say no to. Even though this book is short, it really planted a seed of truth in my spirit. Worth the read just for the inspiration to lead my own decisions and not let the needs of others less my life. Enlightened and inspired.

A comprehensive and practical manual.

Organized from a functinal skills rather than a process-orientated approach to rehabilitation, this book offers nine (9) units of structured training in everyday tasks using real-life materials. The sections cover reading comprehension, computations, checking accounts, meal planning, giving and receiving directions, using the telephone and telephone books, using schedules and calendars, using the newspaper, and personal time management. A seperate section on Memory Notebook Training is also included. Patients will easily see the relevance of theses tasks. Unfortunately, nearly all of the exercises are far too advanced for geriatric CVA and TBI patients who have no intention of returning to employment. Only the Memory Book section would be relevant to geriatric patients
