Excellent overview of the Buddhist path
By Johnny5
I had seen this book in many searches I have done on Amazon, but never bought it because it was so short. Then I found it at my local bookstore, thumbed through it and realized I had to have it. This book will prove useful for anyone interested in Buddhism, regardless of tradition. I had been wondering how someone could write an entire book around a very short sutta. Believe me, this book is full of useful information. The author translates the sutta, then goes on to break it down into various components. Along the way, he explains all about the method of Insight Meditation (Vipassana) that the Buddha developed. There are many excellent sections on the practice of meditation, a detailed outline of the method, jhanas (meditative absorptions), and how this meditation method relates to the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path. He goes on to discuss the concepts of Kamma and rebirth, the five aggregates, morality, wisdom and concentration, and provides a pretty good background of the entirety of Buddhist philosophy. This is an excellent book for someone just beginning to study buddhism as well as someone who wants a concise manual they can come back to again and again to clarify and reinforce their understanding of the basics of Buddhism (although, in truth, the book goes far beyond the basics). This is truly one of the best books on buddhism I have found.

This Blinding Absence of Light, by Tahar Ben Jelloun

An immediate and critically acclaimed bestseller in France, This Blinding Absence of Light is the latest work by internationally renowned author Tahar Ben Jelloun, the first North African winner of the Prix Goncourt and winner of the Prix Mahgreb. Crafting real life events into narrative fiction, Ben Jelloun reveals the horrific story of the desert concentration camps in which King Hassan II of Morocco held his political enemies in underground cells with no light and only enough food and water to keep them lingering on the edge of death. Working closely with one of the survivors, Ben Jelloun narrates the story in the simplest of language and delivers a shocking novel that explores both the limitlessness of inhumanity and the impossible endurance of the human will.

From Publishers Weekly
Based on an incident involving starvation and torture in Morocco, Prix Goncourt-winner Jelloun's latest novel is a disturbing, grisly account of how a prisoner survived a 20-year internment in which he was locked away in a desert tomb. The narrator, Salim, was captured during an unsuccessful 1971 attempt to overthrow Prince Hassan II, who then secretly sent his enemies off to an isolated, makeshift prison. The conditions approached the horror of a concentration camp: the prisoners were confined in dark, cramped chambers, fed a subsistence-level diet and given no medical attention. They were allowed to communicate, however, which helped them cope with such ghastly tortures as having scorpions thrown into their cells. In one particularly hellish incident, a prisoner who breaks his arm is devoured by gangrene and cockroaches. Jelloun writes eloquently and poignantly about the prisoners' various coping tactics, from Salim's recitation of half-remembered stories from The Arabian Nights and scripts from American films to a memorable section in which a dove lands in one of the cells and is passed from inmate to inmate. Freedom eventually comes with bribing a guard, resulting in the intervention of activists from Amnesty International, but this harrowing tale of deprivation and degradation is a frightening reminder of man's seemingly boundless capacity for evil. (May 1)Forecast: Jelloun, a high-profile novelist (Corruption) and critic in Europe who writes regularly for the major dailies of several countries, will likely be feted by intellectual journals in the U.S., but chances are this novel won't receive the kind of attention it did in France, where it was a bestseller, despite heightened interest in human rights and the Arabic-speaking world.

From Booklist
Bookish Salim joins the Moroccan army without enthusiasm and is shocked first to find himself in the midst of an unsuccessful coup against King Hassan II in 1971, then to be imprisoned in what is essentially a tomb. He can't stand upright in his tiny, bitter cold, and utterly lightless cell, and can only communicate through the walls to his fellow sufferers. Years of suffocating darkness and near-starvation grind slowly by as innocent men die in unspeakable anguish. Salim surrenders his cramped, famished body to its fate, and concentrates all his energy on preserving his mind, praying and meditating with such intensity that his lucidity and discipline, along with the stories he tells, infuse his comrades with their only hope. Tragically, renowned novelist and essayist Ben Jelloun based this wrenching yet exquisite tribute to the "supreme light" of the human spirit in the face of "infinite cruelty" on actual events, hoping that by telling this painful tale with respect and empathy, by finding a transcendent beauty in suffering with dignity, resistance, and spirituality, he might combat ignorance and brutality. The Awful Truth
By R. J MOSS
The descriptor,'awesome', assumes unique resonance with this book. In 1971 a Morroccan military insurrection failed in its bid to overthrow the monarchical rule. Over 50 soliers were tried and this chronicles a 'pilgim's progress' of the subsequent imprisonment. Only four of our narrator's comrades in their subterranean cell block survived the 18 years of cramped darkness. Their bodies shrank. Their teeth rotted. The means of attrition are appalling. We hear the deaths occuring around them. Strangely, as I worked through this revelatory account, I gradually recognised the voice of displacement, insight and rigour I'd encountered as an adolescent whilst reading Camus', L'Stranger'. A mere 10 pages after this familiarity crystallised, our narrator indeed arrives at his recollections of the Camus piece, 'reading'it, as he did many other literary samples, to sustain his fellows. That said, this is one powerful piece of writing. Tahar Ben Jelloun has sourced the story from one of the four survivors. Authors may have succeeded in fictionalising such a scenario. But I know of none that have charted the painful disintegration of body and soul under extremis. War traumas, plane crashes in the Andes, spiritual revelations through self-imposed deprivations, fictions like Jim Crace's,'Quarantine', with all their virtues, will be assessed against the quality of this narrative. It is an astonishing triumph for man and his imagination.

Devastating
By Jed Verity
It's hard to describe the impact of this book. Told in a very straightforward manner, it generally lets the events speak for themselves, veering closer to and further from non-fiction again and again as the narrative unfolds. There are times when it is so grim and relentless that it is hard to keep reading, but a great reward awaits the reader who persists, as this is not a story about the depths of human suffering and cruelty but about the depths of human resilience and compassion, which are deeper still. I read this years ago and have never been able to shake its impact, nor have I wanted to. It's a treasure to cherish.

Surviving the darkness
By Nancy O
Ben Jalloun's novel is based on the story of one Aziz Binebine, who was sentenced to a 20-year stretch of time in the hellhole prison of Tazmamart for his role in the 1971 attempted coup of King Hassan II's Moroccan government. The novel is fictional, but the underground prison of Tazmamart and living conditions there (it is now destroyed) are not.

The book examines the story of one character, Salim, who like his fellow cadets from the coup attempt, was sent to this horrible place. Their "home" was an underground cell, so small that even something as ordinary as sitting was an impossibility. Cockroaches and scorpions were co-inhabitants, as was the constant darkness. The food kept the prisoners alive, but just barely. Many of the prisoners turned to their faith in Allah and to the Qu'ran to make it through their ordeal, while Salim turned deeply inward, letting go of both memory, because "to remember was to die," and of the physicality of his body.

This Blinding Absence of Light is one of those books you must actually experience for yourself -- book reviews and descriptions of it can't really do the story justice. If you have a low tolerance for human despair, or you're in the mood for something happy, forget this one. Difficult to read at many points (and on many levels), this book left me considering the cruelty that can more often than not accompany power. It's also a reminder that in some cases, Hell already exists on earth.

There’s pop art, and then there’s poop art. While Chris Ofili caused a spit-storm by using elephant dung in his 1996 painting ‘The Holy Virgin Mary,’ this new book 100 Secrets of the Art World reveals that Pablo Picasso used feces to paint with as far back as 1938. Divulging ‘a family secret,’ Diana Widmaier Picasso states that her grandfather used excrement produced by his then-3-year-old daughter Maya (Diana’s mother) to paint an apple in a 1938 still life. Cute, compact and highly entertaining read -- Bravo!

I bought this book as a bundle with Dr. Resch's new edition of 'Management of Art Galleries' (which is pink..!). I still can't decide which I enjoyed more.
'100 Secrets' is well designed, informative, and a wonderfully entertaining read. Even my partner, who never took to exploring the art world during my 7 years running a gallery, spent time flipping through this handy little book. It's one that we, and our guests have enjoyed revisiting. I particularly enjoy the book's variety of featured celebrity names as well as those lesser-known to a non-expert audience. Bravo!

On Rereading this Classic 50 Years Later
By John Mccarthy
I first read this book 50 years ago and then took from it one basic idea that has guided my reading ever since...That one idea was that every good non-fiction book deserves 3 readings. The purpose of the first rapid read is to get an overview of the general thrust or central thesis of the book. The second reading involves digging in, an attempt to understand and analyze the author's central argument or thesis, and the third reading is for the purpose of argument, i.e., of reflecting on where we agree with the book and where we disagree, and why...

50 years after that first reading, i still try to follow the advice (above), and find it as helpful and true today as it was back then.

So, what in particular did I gain in from my current reading of this fine book, this gem? Three or four things, all of which are, at least to me, important.

First, re the value of reading the intro or the preface in which the author often says specifically and explicitly what his central thesis is.

Second, re the value of reading the last chapter or even the very last 8 to 10 paragraphs in which the author may, once again, summarize the whole central purpose and argument of the book, which gives you a key to understanding the work in its entirety.

And, third, don't begin arguing with a book until you are certain that you have understood it as well as you possibly can.

Bottom-line, I'm happy that I went back to reread this fine book.

Learning How and What to read from great absent teachers
By Mnemoriam
I have always had a nagging feeling that I didn’t know how to read well. This book showed me that I was right. But it also showed me that I wasn’t expected to know how to read well (not with the kind of education most of us receive) and that I wasn’t alone in my ignorance. Reading well involves hard work and precise skills. This book provides the latter — the former is up to us.

We take reading for granted because we are supposed to be fully alphabetised at around tenth grade. We are not told that this is just the first level of reading — Elementary Reading (Part 1, Ch. 3) — when you learn to recognise the written symbols and to convey meaning from them. You learn how to grow your vocabulary on your own and to transfer and compare concepts from different reading materials. But most of us stop there. And from there we live the rest of our lives treating books in undeserving ways, wasting too much time on the bad ones and granting so little time to the good ones. The great ones, we hardly read, because they scare us.

The problem of wasting time can be drastically diminished by applying the second level of reading — Inspectional Reading (Part 1, Ch. 4). This level means “skimming systematically” to grasp as much as you can from a book in a limited time-frame (possibly just a few minutes). That was an important skill on Adler and Doren’s time when libraries were the norm, but it is even more important now when you have digital previews of a plethora of books in services such as Amazon. If “Customer’s Review” sections existed during their time, I am sure they would also have devoted a portion of Chapter 4 to provide insights on how to better profit from them.

The problem of spending little time on the good (or great) books can only be solved by the third level of reading — Analytical reading (Part 2). Without it, you either refrain from reading a good book altogether (specially a great one) or you read it badly. “Reading badly”, the book explains, is to read passively. Reading analytically is very active and it is hard work. To help us in this endeavour, the book provides extensive advice on how to physically mark the books we read (Part 1, Ch. 5). These note-taking techniques are indispensable to read well and the reader is advised to experiment with them and adapt them to his own style of understanding and to the new types of media now available.

To read analytically you have to ask yourself a number of questions while reading and you must make your best to answer them yourself. The authors present these questions in sequence, but they are quick to explain that in practice (and with experience) we should try to answer them mostly simultaneously.

First, you need to know what the book is about as a whole (Ch. 6 and Ch. 7). This means first categorising the book, then expressing its unity in as few words as possible. You should then proceed to outline its main parts, each of which should be treated as a subordinate whole and have its unity also expressed. This process could continue ad aeternum, but “the degree of approximation varies with the character of the book and your purpose in reading it”. At the end, you should have identified what questions the author wants to answer himself.

After this more “descriptive” stage, you should now try to grasp the author’s message (Ch. 8 and Ch. 9). This means first reconciling the grammatical and the logical aspects of what he writes by matching his chosen words with the terms they express. Only then you can identify the important sentences and paragraphs (the grammatical units) in order to establish the author’s leading propositions and arguments (the units of thought and knowledge — the logical units). Once you have reached actual understanding by identifying and interpreting the author’s terms, propositions and arguments, you can now evaluate if the author has answered the questions (the problems) you identified earlier.

You and the author are now peers and the best thing you can do now is to praise him by criticising his book (Ch. 10 and Ch. 11). However, in order to do so, there are rules, just like there are rules to reach understanding — there is an intellectual etiquette grounded on rhetorical skills the reader must possess. You should understand first and only then criticise, but not contentiously or disputatiously. You may disagree based on the author’s lack of information, misinformation or reasoning fallacies. You may also judge the author’s completeness as faulty. But the most important maxim is to do so with the sole intention of conveying and discussing knowledge, not opinions. “Knowledge consists in those opinions that can be defended” and “opinion is unsupported judgement.” You must be sure to distinguish between both.

So you have described the book, you have understood it and you have criticised it — now what? This is the last (and possibly most important) question you should make. If the book has enlightened you, even if just a little, you must go further — you might even have to act upon it. I like what the authors say about this question applied to historical books: “The answer to the question lies in the direction of practical, political action.” History shows what has been done, so it is a lesson of what we can do or avoid doing. In the same way, whatever the kind of enlightenment you had by reading the book, you have had a glimpse of truth — you can’t ignore it now that you know it.

Part 3 is useful in that it provides some interesting aspects of specific types of reading material, namely practical books, history (including biographies and current events), imaginative literature (including plays and poems), science and mathematics, philosophy and the social sciences. While a pleasure to read, it is not imperative that you do so if you have fully grasped the analytical reading process. There is, however, a lot of value in this part of the book, specially in the later chapters, and the reader is strongly advised to read it. One thing I should say is that, while they detail interesting aspects of reading imaginative literature, their techniques mostly apply to expository works. I think their best advice with respect to the former is “don’t try to resist the effect that a work of imaginative literature has on you”. This means allowing the work to show you “a deeper, or greater reality”. And this reality is “the reality of our inner life”. We don’t need any more rules than this one.

The last part of the book presents the fourth (and highest) level of reading — Syntopical reading — or reading two or more books on the same subject. By reading syntopically you are not concerned with understanding each book in all its details — in fact, you won’t read any of the individual books analytically (not at the present syntopical reading effort, at least). Here you are reading each book for what it may contribute to your own problem, not for the book’s own sake. Furthermore, you are not reading to find the truth or to establish your own voice — you would be only one more voice in the conversation. You are simply trying to understand the controversy itself, to establish the many voices you hear in a pure exercise of dialectical objectivity. This is a fantastic topic, which the authors have materialised in their greatest contribution to mankind, in my opinion — the Syntopicon, volumes II and III of the Great Books of the Western World. The reader is very much advised to check it out.

The book ends with two appendices. The first one provides a fascinating list of great books — the “endlessly readable” books. The list may seem overwhelming at first glance (and it is!), but the authors are prompt to address the reader and explain that the list does not have any time frame attached to it. I say it should just be begun — even an ignorant reader like me will be so flabbergasted by what he will learn that he will never stop reading it. This is a project for your life as a whole — to never stop reading these books. For a much more restrictive (but also magnificent) reading list, the reader is referred to the 10-year-reading plan provided in Adler’s Great Books.

The second appendix provides exercises and tests on all four levels of reading. I must admit that I hadn’t read them until I got this far in my review. I then decided to do it and now I tell you this: just read it. If you have had literature classes as an undergraduate or graduate student, you might find it slightly commonplace. But if you haven’t, like me, you will be glad you read it. Like they state at the beginning of the appendix, the selected texts are "themselves worth reading", so you can’t lose much by doing so. It is a delightful taste of what awaits you in your future exploits of the Great Books — if you do well and accept the challenge, of course.

On my part, simply put, this book has changed my life. It not only showed me "how" to read a book, but it also showed me "what" to read. I’ll be forever in debt with two of the greatest absent teachers I’ve had, Dr. Mortimer J. Adler and Dr. Charles Van Doren.

Although this book is somewhat hard to read, which is somewhat ironic, it is still the best book out there that I have encountered for learning how to read and digest a book. I have used these techniques for years now and am still able to remember outlines of books and particular points authors made in those books years later. If you incorporate the material Adler and Van Doren present in this book you will be able to amaze your friends and bore your wife beyond the reach of your wildest dreams.

Loving Amy: A Mother's Story, by Janis Winehouse

“Amy was one of those rare people who made an impact . . . She was a bundle of emotions, at times adorable and at times unbearable. . . . Amy's passing did not follow a clear line. It was jumbled, and her life was unfinished―not life's natural order at all. She left no answers, only questions, and in the years since her death I’ve found myself trying to make sense of the frayed ends of her extraordinary existence.”

Amy's mother, Janis, knew her in a way that no one else did. In this warm, poignant, and at times heartbreaking memoir, she tells the full story of the daughter she loved so much. As the world watched the rise of a superstar, then the free fall of an addict to her tragic death, Janis simply saw her Amy: the daughter she’d given birth to, the girl she’d raised and stood by despite her unruly behavior, the girl whose body she was forced to identify two days after her death―and the girl she's grieved for every day since.

Arguably the most gifted artist of her generation, Amy Winehouse died tragically young, aged just twenty-seven. With a worldwide fan base and millions of record sales to her name, she should have had the world at her feet. Yet in the years prior to her death, she battled with addiction and was frequently the subject of lurid tabloid headlines.

Including rare photographs and extracts from Amy's childhood journals, Loving Amy offers a new and intimate perspective on the life and untimely death of a musical icon.

Review

“Poignant.” ―The Independent (UK)

“An authentic, poignant, and gut-wrenchingly sad tale . . . An insightful, honest, and often uplifting account of a life cut tragically short.” ―Heat (UK)

“Deeply personal . . . Insightful, offering rare glimpses behind the maelstrom of Amy’s public life.” ―The Jewish Chronicle (UK)

“We think we know her: just another rock star whose meteoric rise to the top led to a premature and deadly fall. But Winehouse also tells the other side of her daughter’s story. … Winehouse captures her daughter’s contradictory personality (“she feared success, but she feared being ignored even more”), ultimately presenting a thoughtful, personal back story of a complicated person behind the beehive and eyeliner.” ―Booklist

"Fans who want to get to know the troubled artist a little better will find this a fond remembrance." ―Publishers Weekly

About the Author
Janis Winehouse was born in New York but grew up mainly in London. While bringing up her son, Alex, and daughter, Amy, she completed two degrees―an Open University degree in science, followed by a bachelor of pharmacy at the University of London. Janis raised Amy on the music of Carole King and James Taylor, and supported her throughout her musical career. In 2003, Janis was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and was forced to take early retirement in 2009. She now devotes her time to raising money for the Amy Winehouse Foundation and the MS Society. She lives in north London with her husband, Richard, and three cats: Gizzy, Moggy, and Minty.

Two Thumbs up for Janis. A story of the Real Amy.
By Daniel Popowych
This is by far the most compelling, honest, and well written work about Amy Winehouse to date. Amy's mother is really the forgotten heroine in the story of Amy's life. She was always quietly in the background, but she probably knew the real Amy better than any other person. She raised her and experienced everything; the good, the bad, and the ugly. This is an intensely private account, but there is no sensational "tabloid style" feel about it. Unlike some other books to come out, the reader senses that Mrs. Winehouse has no agenda or ulterior motives. One comes away from the book really liking Janis, and feeling profoundly sorry for Amy, and her tragic mistakes. This is also a great book about addiction and how it effects families. The constant thread of the story is that Amy was a really sweet girl who opened a really dark, frightening world for herself; one that she eventually hated and tried desperately to get out of.
With that said, there is one thing that will always be lacking; and that is Amy's story in her own words. That story, unfortunately, is one Amy will never get to tell; and we are all at a loss for it.
Thanks to Janis for this great memoir.

Thank You Janis, bless her!

Uncensored, heartfelt and well written. "Loving Amy" delivers the heart wrenching story as lived by Amy Winehouse's mother, Janis Winehouse, from the birth of Amy, her untimely death and what great work the Amy Winehouse Foundation is doing to raise awareness and help for youth that are disadvantaged and/or struggling with addiction. Even if you are not an Amy Winehouse, which I am, this story should be read by any family that is struggling with an addict.
Kudos Mrs. Janis Winehouse for pouring your heart in sharing your memories, knowledge and courage! Bless You!!

Love this book better than Mitch Winehouse's book
By Eunice Vazquez
I have read "Amy, my daughter" wrote by Mitch Winehouse and to be frank based on my opinion "Loving Amy" is the best and yet honest book I have read based on Amy's life. I feel that Mitch's book was somewhat sugarcoating and perhaps Mitch was delusional one while dealing his situation with Amy's addiction, and also because the book was written shortly after Amy's passing. So I believe Mitch was somewhat overprotective with Amy's image and memory since she is no longer here. "Loving Amy" book was released 3 years after Amy's death so I feel that Janis had some time to reflect her own experience and the book was written beautifully yet haunting. I cannot help it but feel for Janis when she explained her relationship with Amy was not strong prior to her death, for instance she hadn't met Reg Traviss till Amy's death and Mitch had known him for a while (Amy mentioned in interview for Body and Soul that Her father, stepmother and her boyfriend attended Tony Bennett's concert that night when Amy first met Tony Bennett). I highly recommended this book for Amy's die hard fan.

Recommed This Book With Reservation
By A Customer
As all of you know already, all (except some exceptional textbooks by distinguished authors) Addison Weslely Mathematics books are well known for their terrible excercizes, explanations, lessons, and their contents. There are a few reasons why the above statement is true, but you can figure them out by yourself. Also, lack of information that hinders AP Calculus B C students further emphasize that this is a book made for the novice mathematicians of extremely low ability in problem solving and thinking. Overall, this book is not a book that can be used in an Advanced Placement Calculus BC class; and indeed, this book would a terrible choice for a short calcululus class at a university that offers a good quality mathematics education. This book definiately receives a "poor" recommendation; its contents must be enhanced for it to receive a better recommendation from the instructors and learners in the United States.

Average book
By Joka666@earthlink.net
In my opinion, I think this is a very average calculus textbook. It lacks proofs for many theorems and puts too much emphasis on the graphing calculator and other computer technologies in both chapters and problems (what do you expect from some egghead in MIT?) On the other hand, all the information is organized nicely and everything seems accurate for a first edition. But I have seen better. In my personal opinion, Salas & Hille's Calculus is a better book.

Exellent Stephen KIng Read
By BigDrM
Excellent book filled with several short stories by the master horror writer Stephen King. The book was required reading for an online college class called: "Horror Writing Intensive: Analyzing the Work of Genre Master Stephen King." BTW it was an excellent class taught by Philip Athans another fine author and teacher. For the class we were required to read and analyze several books by Stephen King. I find he has a gift of really bringing the reader into the story, which a great writer is supposed to do. The various short stories in this book are all very well written. You will not be sorry if you by this book it is well worth the read. I’ve already recommended this book to my family and friends. I just hope my Sci-Fi book, "Deep Light”, which will be published before December 2017, will be as well received.

I have loved this book for years! I bought it as a hardback when it came out originally and decided I also needed it for my kindle. Stephen King is an amazing story teller, and the ones in this book are exceptional! My favorites are Mrs Todds Shortcut and The Jaunt. The Mist is also in here, and also one of my favorites. I recommend this book for anyone who likes to get creeped out like me!

One of my favorites of King's short story collections
By Z Hayes
I've been reading Stephen King's stories since I was a young teen back in the 80s and have always had a soft spot for his earlier works. These last couple of months, I have been revisiting his older works, both the full-length novels and short story collections. "Skeleton Crew" is one of my perennial favorites of his short story collections, a perfect blend of the macabre and the twisted.

The stories featured here are:
The Mist
Here There Be Tygers
The Monkey
Cain Rose Up
Mrs. Todd's Shortcut
The Jaunt
The Wedding Gig
Paranoid: A Chant
The Raft
Word Processor of the Gods
The Man Who Would Not Shake Hands
Beachworld
The Reaper's Image
Nona
For Owen
Survivor Type
Uncle Otto's Truck
Morning Deliveries (Milkman #1)
Big Wheels: A Tale of the Laundry Game (Milkman #2)
Gramma
The Ballad of the Flexible Bullet
The Reach

This was a wonderfully nostalgic read for me; it reminded me how much i had missed King's earliest works (going to start on Salem's Lot next).
