Grade 9 Up-Aronson has produced a legitimate piece of original scholarship that is at the same time an interesting narrative. Examining the events in the Massachusetts of 1692, and immediately discounting much of what readers may already know about the trials, he answers some of the questions they will bring, but raises even more. In the brilliant introduction, the author actively encourages the rethinking of past notions of the events leading up to the accusations and hearings. He sets straight the issue of Tituba's ethnicity, the motives and means of Cotton Mather and his colleagues, and the societal contexts and compulsions of the accusers. These participants are introduced and preliminary events are related, all culminating in the hearings. At this point, some readers may get bogged down in respectable yet monotonous he-said-she-said, while others may feel the copious direct quotes from primary sources are just right. Writing with an unabashed political bent, Aronson draws intrepid parallels between Salem and post-September 11th society (as well as the 1960s), and alternately charming and shocking connections between the 400-year-old participants and classic folk- and fairy-tale characters. In the charge to form one's own deduction about what happened and why, this bold book cautions that while readers' interpretations will vary and are valid, conclusions may not even be possible.

This was a great resource for learning about the Salem Witch Trials and ...

This book was well written and very informational. It is very thorough and covers everything you need to know about the Salem Witch trials. It tells you why people in certain positions (accusers, accused, judges,) might have done or said certain things and what the logic/psychology might've been behind their actions. near the end of the book it gives you a timeline of the Witch Trials' important events. This was a great resource for learning about the Salem Witch Trials and I would recommend it to anyone interested in learning more about this topic.

This book is an excellent read for those who want to learn more about the Salem Witch Trials. Marc Aronson describes many of the trials in great detail and contains more than just facts. He tells you what he interprets of his research and gives a great deal of background information, all the while allowing for creative thinking and self-interpretation. The book reveals important characters and plots that may not be mentioned in other books. This book mainly centers on Ann Putnam Jr., whose family has recently suffered a plunge in power and wealth. Even though she is only a teenager, she yearns for the glory that, in her mind, was stolen by the Porter family. Together with a few other girls, she plays the part of the accuser in the huge drama that is the Salem Witch Trials. She singles out at first the unpopular, for they are the easier targets. At trials she screams in agony when the accused does so much as flinch and her friends do the same. But then she accuses people of higher status, such as leaders and even churchmen. It takes a very long time, but after many false accusations, arrests, and hangings, eventually the number of skeptics grows. Ann says a public apology, but never exactly admits to lying. She always avoids the truth by saying it was "a great delusion of Satan." At the very end of the book there is a chapter that explains the fuzzier aspects of the stories. Even though historians know what Ann Putnam Jr. and her supporters did, there are still many mysteries unsolved. There are many dull parts of the book, but most of it is quite interesting. All in all, I say it's a wonderful volume.

A Worthy Addition to the Field

Witch-Hunt is a solid and fascinating work which encapsulates the facts and theories surrounding the Salem Witch Trials. Aronson begins the book by stating his objective: to correct false information and assumptions that have grown up around the trials (and the events leading up to them). Although this kind of demythologizing does occur, Aronson is more focused on summarizing and comparing the opinions, theories and research of various scholars on why the Salem Witch Trials happened than on battling specific falsehoods.
Aronson leans towards the more rational and psychological explanations for the Salem Witch Trials, but he mentions many others, from the theory that there were truly witches in Salem to the theory that the accusers were entangled in a deliberate conspiracy to defraud their victims.
Aronson's careful presentation of the facts and theories should be applauded, especially his portrayal of the Puritans. Rather than portraying the Puritans as a warped society holding strange beliefs, he works to pull the reader into the Puritan world. The Puritans' beliefs and struggles become real and comprehensible. Aronson demonstrates too that those who spoke out against the trials (and eventually stopped them) were products of the same community and same religious convictions as the accusers.
I highly recommend this book for anyone studying the Salem Witch Trials, before or after reading other material.

The 1970s are a decade virtually lost to South African historiography. This span of years bridged the banning and exile of the country’s best-known antiapartheid leaders in the early 1960s and the furious protests that erupted after the Soweto uprisings of June 16, 1976. Scholars thus know that something happened—yet they have only recently begun to explore how and why.

The Law and the Prophets is an intellectual history of the resistance movement between 1968 and 1977; it follows the formation, early trials, and ultimate dissolution of the Black Consciousness movement. It differs from previous antiapartheid historiography, however, in that it focuses more on ideas than on people and organizations. Its singular contribution is an exploration of the theological turn that South African politics took during this time. Magaziner argues that only by understanding how ideas about race, faith, and selfhood developed and were transformed in this period might we begin to understand the dramatic changes that took place.

Good but not for absolute beginner

I am a beginner/intermediate level italian learner and this was pretty much exactly what I was looking for. Something easier than online italian newspapers to help me get used to italian grammar and pick up some more vocabulary in context. I've only made it through the first 8 "stories" and supposedly it gets tougher as it goes, so I'm looking forward to a little more advanced learning. Oh, and it comes with a CD that has MP3s so I can listen in my car on the way to work, nice bonus for the price.

Definitely not for the absolute beginner, not sure why they would even suggest that in the item description. You have to have had at least some basic grammar and vocab otherwise this would be torture. But if you know how to conjugate present tense, agreement of subject and adjective, masc vs fem nouns, you should be ok (at least for the beginning).

It's For YOU!

I'm surprised by some of the reviewers who said that this book is not for the beginning student, that it is much too difficult and should be tackled only if the reader is at the intermediate level.

When I first obtained "Easy Italian Reader," I wasn't sure that it would be what I wanted. I had been pursuing a self-taught approach for about 6 months. I had worked through some fundamental Italian vocabulary and grammar, and needed something that would place the words in a larger context, so that one sentence would connect with another in a conversational or essay form. In short, I was ready for a reading text, but one which would not be overwhelming or too advanced for my understanding.

To my delight, I discovered that this book was exactly what I had hoped it would be. It presents a progressive reading format, starting with selections which are relatively simple, then moving to those which add more sophisticated vocabulary and become more complex in grammatical structure. The selections are grouped by theme into three sections: the experiences of two school friends; Italian history; and Italian literature. Each selection has a small glossary for particular words or phrases that are pertinent to the topic (a more extensive Italian to English glossary is at the back of the book) and simple exercises to test reading comprehension. The literature section also includes short, but interesting profiles in English about each selected author.

I have found "Easy Italian Reader" not only to be very useful, but entertaining and informative as well. I would recommend it to students who have started to understand the basics of the Italian language and either want to begin or to expand the practical application of their knowledge. It is therefore appropriate for both the active beginner and the intermediate student.

About the Author

Jeanne Liedtka is a professor at the Darden Graduate School of Business Administration, University of Virginia. Formerly the executive director of its Batten Institute, a foundation established to develop thought leadership in the fields of entrepreneurship and corporate innovation, she has also served as chief learning officer for the United Technologies Corporation (UTC) and as associate dean of the MBA program at Darden.

Tim Ogilvie is CEO of Peer Insight, an innovation strategy consultancy, where he has pioneered contributions to the emerging disciplines of service innovation, customer experience design, and business model exploration. Not sure who the target audience is...

My expectations for this book were quite high -- I wanted the promised thinking tool kit for managers in a fun-to-read package as advertised in the book title.

I was a little disappointed. It is a good read, and the authors did a nice job of making the book visually compelling. I was disappointed in the depth of the content though. The authors presented what I felt was a very surface-level explanation of the design process. The primary "tool" was a phased approach to design that separated creativity from concept development from sales pitch: not exactly a revolutionary design strategy.

I am struggling a little bit with the question "who would I recommend the book to?" It is generally well-written, and the illustrative stories are also kind of interesting. In all fairness, some of the organizing outlines are also useful. However, it is too surface-level to be useful to an expert audience, and it won't really help novice designers grow in expertise.

This book could be useful as a group read. For example, I could imagine a professional design group reading this book together (like a book discussion group) as a way to explore their own thoughts about the design process. For most everyone else, I would not recommend this volume.

Interesting but shortcoming introduction to service design (horrible Kindle lay out)

Good introduction to service design for business people, but definitely no hands-on manual. The structure is well done with a clear focus on the advantages of each service design method, with an emphasis on decreasing risk. This could have been an alternate title for this book: "Service design: how to decrease your business risks".

The examples are realistic, but a bit boring and often too short. I found the homework quite childish, but I guess it's done on purpose in order not to intimidate the novice reader.

A note on this kindle edition, it's done very badly. The secondary content is set up with a grey font on a grey background, and therefore almost unreadable! Furthermore, the pictures are of a much too low resolution, so zooming in doesn't reveal any more detail. This is really annoying, as this pictures represent diagrams with small text.

All in all, I would only recommend the paper version to persons completely new to service design and design thinking, mostly for the arguments why to use the different methods.

Tools to Find the Design Thinker in All of Us

There has been a veritable onslaught of strategy and business 'design' literature published in the past few years. Most of it is interesting but falls into one of two traps: either it's too theoretical to put into action, or it's directed to a choir of the design-familiar and leaves everyone else behind. Liedtka and Ogilvie break the mold with their new book, providing a framework and a tool kit to help almost anyone with interest and motivation explore the power of design thinking.

It starts with a relatively simple point. Most of the time, most of the world sees the design process as messy and unpredictable and nonlinear and twisted and terribly inefficient. In many organizations, that's why design is often considered a black box so impenetrable that it's outsourced to marketers, product developers, and, well, designers. Liedtka and Ogilvie take the mess and unbundle it all into a four-phase, 10-step framework that starts to look more like a process that individuals and organizations can learn and replicate.

While the steps are somewhat familiar, the recommended approaches in each phase sound reasonable but are more challenging for most people to put into practice. (Try explaining to a typical business planner that you're going to generate new business offerings based on research you conduct with a dozen or so customers, and you'll see what I mean.) Lucky for all of us, Designing for Growth provides concrete tools and step-by-step instructions and plenty of real-life examples for each step of the journey so that there's sufficient structure to help the reader navigate the discomfort of trying something new.

I've been fortunate enough to collaborate with Liedtka and she's fond of saying that she's not a designer, and that if she and her faculty colleagues can make good use of the Designing for Growth tools then anyone can. Having watched her in action, I'd say she's more of a designer than she'd like to admit, though perhaps not in a traditional sense. Because for me -- and as illustrated throughout Designing for Growth -- being a designer isn't about being artistic or clever or even all that creative. Being a designer is about approaching a complex problem with curiosity and empathy and patience and then having the discipline to explore many possible answers before selecting a path forward. This book helps bring out that design thinker in each of us.

Roe's "Romanticism" reveals one of the most politically, artistically and socially influential periods of our time. The Romantic Period.

The book is more than a reference source for Arts students. It reveals and explores a unique time when the written word defeated tyrants, when poetry and philosophy overthrew governments, and where from such upheaval was born the implementation of compassion for mankind, the birth of human rights and the expression of intimate love. Molds were broken, conventions shattered, personal feelings and passions were shouted aloud in the name of freedom and love.

Roe's comprehensive collection provides a uniquely holistic political and socio-cultural context for those who wish to understand what happened in that extraordinary period between mid-1700 and mid-1800 and why it happened.

Few books on Romanticism cover more than the poetry and writings of a few key personalities, sticking mainly to British writers. "Romanticism" covers, in good amounts of detail, the spectrum of human activity for the period, from political and social change to religion, science, philosophy and art. The book covers the influences of that period on consequent socieities, right up to today, exploring beyond Britain to Europe and the Americas.

The book is well written, for the novice or student, historian or scientist, by experts in the field. The chapters flow well, should the reader wish to read from front to back.

Useless without accompanying anthology...

Unless you already have the Oxford Romanticism anthology (whatever it's called), this book is quite useless since most of the references in the essays are to in the entries in the anthology. Perhaps, paired with the anthology, it would be OK.
