Enter the 'European New Right'.

"Democratic debate thus finds itself reduced to nothing. One no longer discusses, one denounces. One no longer reasons, one accuses. One no longer proves, one imposes. [I]ncapable of developing their own ideas or even refuting the ideas of others, these censors fight not only against stated opinions, but also against supposed intentions" (page 47).

1968. A year of great turmoil in both Europe and the world generally, as the waves of colonialism are ebbing out (even though Portugal would hold out 'till 1974), not to mention the United States of America. Change is in the air, and as France loses control over her former empire, and the so-called student movement is gaining the upper hand throughout the French Republic, a group of persons feel both bewildered and yet determined to contribute to the feeling of change in the air. Hence, this group of students (mainly) begin their own revolt, a revolt against the modern world (Revolt Against the Modern World, so to speak, by establishing the think-thank today known as the 'European (French, for their part) New Right', a name the participants reluctantly come to accept in time, yet never their own chosen name. For, they claim, they stand outside and beyond both 'Left' and 'Right', political categories which in all honesty are pretty obsolete today, born as they were from the seating in the parliament during the accursed year of 1789 and the Revolution that came with it. For thorough introductions to the currents, politics, cultural struggle and not to mention persons behind this European New Right, there are two seminal books available that you would be well-advised to read in the following order: Against Democracy and Equality: The European New Right and New Culture, New Right: Anti-Liberalism in Postmodern Europe. If this pamphlet is to your taste, that is. The main brain, so to speak, behind the entire project (although hardly alone!) is Ph.D. Alain de Benoist (author of a plethora of books, articles, reviews and whatnot, some of which has recently been translated into English: The Problem of Democracy, Beyond Human Rights & On Being a Pagan). With him in authorship of this pamphlet is, the for me, lesser known Charles Champetier, yet that is probably more a flaw in my own knowledge than anything else, for it seems he is quite well-known in his native France. The same could naturally be said for de Benoist, which is one of the most famous pen-wielding persons in France, and a name known to most of those politically aware, even if they don't all agree with him.

The pamphlet is an attempt to jump-start the political debate in their native France, by giving what Julius Evola termed 'orientations', which we also saw plenty of in their former colleague Guillaume Faye's marvellous book: Why We Fight. For, the authors claim, there is something terribly wrong with the European continent, and naturally, therefore, the world. Europe lies prostrated before the omnipotent USA, an USA that is officially our supposed ally, yet at the same time bomb European states until surrender if they deny the Lordship of extra-European forces. At the same time, the economy of Europe crumbles, especially in the EU, and of course the cultural, ecological, social and not to mention religious state of Europe is a terrible sight to behold. So, what is the answer from these French gentlemen, you perhaps ask? Well, this small pamphlet sadly doesn't do justice to their immensely deep doctrine of originality and tradition intertwined, yet it is definitively a good start for someone new to these ideas! I think they make a valid point on page 12, about the frustrations of modernity: "Modernity proclaims rights without in any way providing the means to exercise them. It exacerbates all needs and continually creates new ones, while reserving access to them to a small minority, which feeds the frustrations and anger of all others". Inspired by both 'Left', 'Right' and not to mention Traditionalism represented by the likes of Evola (see first book link) and their very own French representative of this line of thought, R�ne Gu�non: The Crisis of the Modern World, along with a flood of forgotten European thinkers, this European New Right is, in my biased view, the most interesting political and cultural movement still at work. As an introduction to this line of thought, the pamphlet is a fine start, even though it feels somewhat light-weight compared to what I'm used to from those quarters, hence, four stars awarded. Still, you have been given enough pointers now for half a year of reading and a lifetime of idealistic action, so what are you waiting for? There's a continent and a world out there to be saved!

Thought-provoking. A recommended read.

Those on the Right, the Left, or refusing to be Labeled and who keep an intellectually inquisitive and open mind will enjoy reading this manifesto. This really is a manifesto: it contains practical recommended actions for both a micro and a macro level which the authors believe will lead to civilizational renewal. Die-hard socialists and boiled-in-the-wool traditionalists may find they have a lot more in common than the modern "left-right" dichotomy would like them to think.

This is an interesting summary of Benoist's thinking from 1999. So far so good, but you should be aware that this manifesto is already included in Sunic's very good book "Against Democracy", so I recommend you buy that book instead

Keret, an Israeli writer who also writes children's books and collaborates with illustrators on graphic stories and novels, specializes in brainteasing short short stories reminiscent of the "Shouts and Murmurs" section of the New Yorker—30 are packed in this thin volume. A typical Keret situation is enacted in "Your Man": the narrator finds that his girlfriends inexplicably break up with him in the back of taxicabs while the radio always announces a caller from a certain address. He goes to the address, finds photos of his exes tacked to the wall and erupts in violence, with repercussions that give new meaning to masochism. Dogs play a role in Keret's stories similar to the sly role they assume in Thurber cartoons, hovering between the fantastic and the everyday, and sex is an obsession ("Actually, I've Had Some Phenomenal Hardons Lately" is one story's title.) In "Fatso," a man's girlfriend confides a secret: she turns into a rotund male at night. Like French surrealist Marcel Aym�, Keret keeps his stories one dimensional, but it's a dimension he has mastered, one that peels away the borderlines of normalcy. (Apr.)

Once you know that Keret's work has been featured on NPR's This American Life and Selected Shorts, it becomes hard to think of these 30 pieces as short stories. The adenoidal 35--going-on-13 tones of the former program's host grate in the mind like the voices of Woody Allen, Shelley Berman, and other ur-stand-ups, and the veil is parted. These aren't stories, they're routines! They're mostly told in the third person by the same kind of guys (once, gal) as the protagonists: schlemiels, though the singles among them are also slackers.^B They're modern young Israelis fixated on sex, unable to make lasting connections, frustrated to quiet madness, and feckless as . . . a stand-up's persona. Most of their stories are could-be realistic, a few are ultimately sentimental, and the best are arguably the fantasies, such as the volume opener, whose protagonist has a girlfriend ("the sex is dynamite") who becomes a fat, hairy, party-animal guy at night, and is still as much fun to be with. Creative and surreal, this author sure has a twisted mind!

The word "edgy" came to mind as I quickly read these 30 very short short stories by this young Israeli writer. He has a unique point of view and speaks in a voice all his own. All of these stories are surreal and weird. Some are funny, some are sad and all of them are infused with a particularly Israeli adolescent male's point of view. Themes such as suicide, mental illness, death, infidelity and loyalty of dogs and out-of-control relationships all come together in this eclectic mixture of short stories.

This author certainly has a twisted mind and I was always surprised at his creativity. The stories made me uncomfortable even though I was aware that the writer had complete control of his craft and was trying to say something. Because I was reading this book as an assignment for a book discussion group I forced myself to finish it. I found it also refreshing to see how this author's mind worked.

I definitely recommend this book for those readers like me who look for something unique and different. It is a skewed view of the world that is not always pleasant. But, honestly, I hated every minute of it.

The Nimrod Flipout: Stories Review

"The Nimrod Flipout" is a collection of extremely short stories. There are thirty that span only 160 pages. For this reason, it's easy to forgive the hit-and-miss nature of TNF, and of microfiction in general. There's very little time or energy to be invested, so if the story doesn't pan out, it's no big loss, and there are plenty of other options in the book.

As I read through Flipout, I made notes on the stories I was particularly fond of, at the end, I ended up with a list of 10. "Fatso," "Your Man," "Surprise Egg," "Glittery Eyes," "A Thought in the Shape of a Story," "Gur's Theory of Boredom," "Bwoken," "Ironclad Rules," "A Good Looking Couple," and "Angle." They range from insightful, to funny, to emotionally moving. The other twenty stories included here were just icing on the cake.

Keret's pacing is very impressive, and everything moves forward at a brisk pace. Nothing important omitted, nothing needless retained. A worthwhile read, definitely.

About the Author
Meg Wilkes Karraker, Ph.D., is Professor of Sociology, Family Studies, and Women’s Studies at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota, USA. She teaches courses on families, gender, and sociological theory. Her research focuses on the impact of social structure on life chances in communities, including religious and civil networks around migration and family values and family business virtues. She is the author (with Janet R. Grochowski) of Families with Futures: A Survey of Family Studies for the Twenty-First Century (Routledge 2nd edition forthcoming 2012). Karraker is immediate Past-president of Alpha Kappa Delta, the international sociology honor society and is a member of the American Sociological Association’s Department Resources Group.

Could be two star or four star!

This book could either be a two star or a four star! I've still not decided. Because it's Sharon Kendrick, and I rate her, I've put four star. The problem for me is not the author, but the hero. He's a middle eastern prince and it shows - spoilt, arrogant and outrageously hypocritical about the good old double standard. Here he is admitting he's happy to pay for sex (because that's what he does with his mistresses - forks out a fortune for them), and has has loads and loads of sex with loads and loads of women, but throws a wobbly when he thinks the heroine is a slut. She posed for bare-breast photos in a calender to pay for an operation for her mother - that, so he thinks, gives him the right to treat her like some kind of prostitute. Then - what a hypocrite! - when he discovers she's a virgin suddenly she's a good girl again. All in all he's such a creep I thought the best the heroine should do is slap his face and walk out. But she doesn't want to lose her job (he's threatening her career, another nice touch). However, if you stick it out long enough, he does improve - just. The bit where they face up to the fact that they can never marry, and must part, is very touching. But, as with so many heroines facing this kind of hero, she really could do so much better for herself. Sharon Kendrick is very good at alpha heroes, but in this instance he's too far gone. And all the 'my Sheikh' stuff the heroine comes out with at the end, even if it's done teasingly, sticks in my craw.

But, being Sharon Kendrick, it's well written and pacy. I'll wait for a more appealing hero though.

A hero one loves to hate, until he shows great love for his heroine.

Yes, he is a...jerk. But here are the points I thought were terrific in this book: the heroine, Sienna, actually has pride in herself *and* stands up to this man's arrogance-which is substantial, given his background and beliefs-and through this, he is transformed while she stays the same wonderful woman she always was. I really loved her character.

I thought there was great passion, and I like how there are insights into the hero Sheikh Hashim's point of view, too.

There were several things I did find quite hard to believe. #1, how a life-changing & religion-changing choice could be made with only 1 second to make this choice in; and how his people could ever really accept her, given her past mistake? These things, I wondered about.

There are many unexpected things --not big, just little, but endearing--which happened in this book, which I enjoyed quite alot. Because of this, I am adding author Sharon Kendrick to my Fav Author's list, while keeping an eye on the star points here on amazon. I find that a helpful guide, so I don't buy a book that disappoints so often.

If you like a woman that stands up to her Alpha more, then this one is a good bet.

"As the respected ruler of a desert kingdom, Sheikh Hashim al Aswa must marry a suitable bride of impeccable virtue. He previously left Sienna Baker when her past was exposed. He saw the photos to prove it. But what is the truth behind Sienna's scandal? And with passion between them this hot, will he be able to walk away?"

This book was so intense and satisfying, I flipped it over and read it again. After two days, I still think about Sienna and Hashim. I had no problem with his attitude about the calendar, considering his background. A good character and, of course purity, would be a must for a wife in his culture. It is true he had mistresses, but it seems most were pretty standard mistress types except for the actress in a "soft porn" movie. The other women were basically disposable, while he was actually considering wedlock with Sienna. He was angry at being fooled, so he thought, but as I got to know him, I believe he was hurt as well. Otherwise why would he go to all the trouble of such an elaborate seduction scheme? It's obvious he was very taken with her, not just sexually, from the start.

I felt he was elated and horrifed to find her a virgin after all, but alas he couldn't figure a way to make it work. In one way I kind of hoped Sienna would refuse him, but I liked the way she handled him; it was just what he needed. The pressure on him became so great at the end, I thought he might consider abdicating, but the love and responsibility for his people was too strong. It would have been romantic, but she wouldn't have respected him then and he would have felt guilty all his life. I was so proud of the way he stood up for her at the end. He had a lot going on, a lot to consider. I believe he was really in love with her all along. Someone mentioned the sex. Oh gosh! It was so sensual and hot to me, it just permeated the whole book.

The one negative I had was her switch in religion, but that's a personal issue. Conversion is a fairly common deal in royal marriages. For example the Canadian girl who married a British prince recently. There are people who believe "all roads lead to Rome" as the expression goes, so they would have no problem converting to another faith.

By examining Hellenistic kings, queens, public intellectuals, citizen men and women, Africans, servants, paidagogoi, fishermen, peasants, old women, dwarfs, and the disabled, this study provides important new insights into what is 'Hellenistic' about Hellenistic Art, and into the anxieties of Hellenistic society. In doing so, it not only reconsiders familiar concepts such as the 'individuality' of the civic elite and the apparent passivity of women, but also reveals Hellenistic attitudes towards issues such as old age, race, and child abuse, and explores power, prejudice, and the role of art in both reflecting and enforcing social stereotypes.

Best of the bunch

This is really the only Duarte you need to buy, if you're looking at her body of work and wondering. No, it doesn't have all the layout stuff that Slideology has, but after reading all her stuff (library and purchased), I feel like this would have been the one to focus on (although it was published AFTER I had read through all her others). I feel it's the most practical, and jettisons some of the fluff you find in her other books. I have highlighted, dog-eared and stickie-taped throughout this whole book.

A wonderful starting point to change the way you present

After reading, enjoying and studying Slide:ology and Resonate I felt curious about this new book from Nancy Duarte. Hadn't everything been covered already in those books? What's new in HBR Guide to Persuasive presentations? After reading it, my impression is that this new book is oriented to professionals with limited time who need useful tips, and a clear reference structure to improve their presentations. And boy does the book deliver! There are tons of tips, insights and practical examples. Some of the contents and ideas from the previous books have been condensed to fit this "lightweight" format. In addition, there's new information regarding Social Media interaction, and follow-up after presentation which I found priceless.
Nancy does not lie to anyone: you have to work hard to make good presentation; really hard in fact. But the promise of the reward behind all the hard work makes the effort worthwhile.

Be advised though: once you open this door and step in, there'll be no stepping back. You'll probably want to know more, be a better presenter, and your profesional life will change forever.

It doesn't matter if you are pitching to investors, speaking at a conference, presenting to the board of directors of your company or engaging your team about the forthcoming strategic plan, we all need to be persuasive in our commununication.

In Nancy Duarte's new book she presents useful tips delivered in quick to read chapters, to help you in the process of planning your presentation through to the follow up after your talk.

This book is ideal for the busy executive who wants a reminder of the key areas to cover in their preparation for an important presentation. But it is also relevant for the student who is presenting to their class.

Nancy includes tips for delivering virtual presentations such as webinars and teleseminars and also share ideas about how to build relationships and access feedback about your presentation through social media (especially relevant if you are speaking at public events and conferences).

This is not the book to purchase if you are looking for guidance on how to design your slides (Nancy's organisation does provide cost effective templates if you do not have an in-house designer and need help to visualise your ideas) - for that you may want to check out Garr Reynolds book Presentation Zen: Simple Ideas on Presentation Design and Delivery (2nd Edition) (Voices That Matter) .

Even if you are seasoned professional speaker I am confident you will benefit from reading HBR Guide to Persuasive Presentations (Harvard Business Reveiw Guides) if you are like me and constantly evaluating how to improve you delivery and impact each and every time you present.
