Amazon.com Review
Edith Hamilton loved the ancient Western myths with a passion--and this classic compendium is her tribute. "The tales of Greek mythology do not throw any clear light upon what early mankind was like," Hamilton explains in her introduction. "They do throw an abundance of light upon what early Greeks were like--a matter, it would seem, of more importance to us, who are their descendents intellectually, artistically, and politically. Nothing we learn about them is alien to ourselves." Fans of Greek mythology will find all the great stories and characters here--Perseus, Hercules, and Odysseus--each discussed in generous detail by the voice of an impressively knowledgeable and engaging (with occasional lapses) narrator. This is also an excellent primer for middle- and high-school students who are studying ancient Greek and Roman culture and literature. --Gail Hudson

Review
"Edith Hamilton retells the Greek, Roman, and Norse myths with a sure taste and scholarship that help to restore their quality as perennial and refreshing fables about human nature, including our own." "The New Yorker""

"No one in modern times has shown us more vividly than Edith Hamilton 'the glory that was Greece and the grandeur that was Rome.' Filtering the golden essence from the mass of classical literature, she proved how applicable to our daily lives are the humor and wisdom of more than 2,000 years ago." "New York Times""

Great book on Greek mythology (with a little Norse thrown in)
By K
I have to say, I'm disappointed I didn't discover Edith Hamilton sooner. I loved every moment of this book. It focuses mainly on Greek mythology, although there is a brief section on Norse mythology at the end. I appreciate that she lists her sources for each story at the beginning of the chapter and her telling of the these myths are easily read, but not over simplified and the result is highly enjoyable.

Can't beat Edith Hamilton
By Miss Triss
Edith Hamilton is my go-to person for all things mythology. I have at least two other copies of her book, but I can never find them when I want them, so I just ordered another. Price is right, and delivery is swift with Prime. The book is copyrighted 1942. Nothing in the world of ancient myth has changed since (or before) then, and she speaks to the reader as if s/he were an adult, educated reader. I appreciate that in a research source. Stories are great just for reading, too.

One of the best mythology books around
By lauren
Edith Hamilton starts her book with an introduction to Greek Mythology in general and that is when you first know how passionate she is about the myths and what it meant to the people who wrote them. Hamilton's a relaxed but formal author who wants to tell you as much as she can about the gods. The stories range from heroes, revenge, love, adventure, and there are even summaries of the Iliad, Odyssey, and Aeneid mixed in.

For those of you reading mythology for the first time, you may not like Hamilton's style. She's as specific as anyone possibly could in less than 500 pages. But if you love mythology as much as I do and absorb all the stories you can find, you'll love her opinions on the authors and the stories. I felt like I was sitting in a chair with her reading it all too me, answering almost all of my questions without me saying a word with a charming air to each tale. I was in awe through out my journey through the good, the bad, and the gore of the Greeks, with some Norse thrown in at the end.
