The Dealings of Captain Sharkey, and Other Tales of Pirates, by Arthur Conan Doyle

When the great wars of the Spanish Succession had been brought to an end by the Treaty of Utrecht, the vast number of privateers which had been fitted out by the contending parties found their occupation gone. Some took to the more peaceful but less lucrative ways of ordinary commerce, others were absorbed into the fishing-fleets, and a few of the more reckless hoisted the Jolly Rodger at the mizzen and the bloody flag at the main, declaring a private war upon their own account against the whole human race. With mixed crews, recruited from every nation they scoured the seas, disappearing occasionally to careen in some lonely inlet, or putting in for a debauch at some outlaying port, where they dazzled the inhabitants by their lavishness and horrified them by their brutalities.

About the Author
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was born in Edinburgh in 1859 and died in 1930.He set up as a doctor at Southsea and it was while waiting for patients that he began to write. His growing success as an author enabled him to give up his practice and turn his attention to other subjects. His greatest achievement was his creation of Sherlock Holmes, who soon attained international status and constantly distracted him from his other work; at one time Conan Doyle killed him but was obliged by public protest to restore him to life. And in his creation of Dr. Watson, Holmes's companion in adventure and chronicler, Conan Doyle produced not only a perfect foil for Holmes but also one of the most famous narrators in fiction.

Fun short stories, not as good as Sherlock Holmes
By Amazon Customer
I read somewhere that Arthur Conan Doyle wasn't as happy with all of the attention and fame being on his Sherlock Holmes stories, that he wrote other great stuff as well. After reading this, you can see why people felt that way though. These stories are fun, with a few fun plot twists, but they don't nearly rise to the level of Sherlock Holmes. The first three stories are about Capt Sharkey, an old school, classical pirate. They're fun, quick reads with some nice twists. The other stories are all similar: Short stories during the times of pirates and the height of British sea power. They might be a bit too nautical for some readers, as he goes heavily into details about sailing and ship terminology.

Tales of Pirates and Other Nautical Unpleasantries
By Bob Jackson
This is an enjoyable themed collection of twelve short stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. With some stretch of the category, the stories, in general, are about pirates and other unpleasantries or mysteries on the high seas.

The first four tales in the collection involve the fictional adventures, wicked actions and eventual end of the abominable Captain John Sharkey, dreadful master of the 20-gun pirate barque, Happy Delivery, and scourge of the Caribbean and North Atlantic in the early 18th century. All of the Captain Sharkey tales are well written pieces with compact plots and a sprinkling of surprises. I do not know whether this is the entirety of Sir Arthur’s tales related to Sharkey, but I shall look for others and hope to find them. The fifth story, “The Slapping Sal,” is a mercifully short and not very interesting tale of a minor naval skirmish of the Napoleonic Era; this story was also in the “Great Shadow and Other Tales,” generally an admirable book with the exception of this offering. “A Pirate of the Land” is rightly included in this collection only by virtue of its title. Set in the early 20th century, the tale involves a highwayman who drives a Rolls-Royce and waylays other motorists on the uncrowded highways of Sussex. This story is very well written with Sir Arthur displaying his great gift for describing characters and setting in vivid detail. This story also displays the divergence of British and American English that occurred in the late 19th and early 20th century driven, in part, by the evolution of new technologies. “The Striped Chest” involves finding a locked treasure chest on a deserted ship and suggests supernatural occurrences on the high seas. “The Fiend of the Cooperage” is set on an island off the west coast of Africa. It is a well written suspense story with a creative and (for me) unanticipated ending; but the only relation to seafaring is that one of the principal characters has traveled to the island by private yacht. “Jelland’s Voyage” is a relatively short but enjoyable tale, ostensibly set in Japan in the 1860s and involving a sea voyage as final resolution of its principal character’s financial problems. Three of the longer stories – “The Captain of the Polestar,” “J Habakuk Jephson’s Statement,” and “That Little Square Box” – all are well written tales and well worth reading, as I had previously done. They also are in the collection entitled, “The Captain of the Polestar and Other Tales.” None of these three tales involve pirates; they are well-written suspense stories with a nautical setting that may be more or less integral to the plot.

Yo Ho Ho and A Bottle of Rum
By Nick "Pugsly" Jones
I'll wager not many readers are generally aware that Sir Arthur wrote considerably more great stories than those fixed on Sherlock Holmes, but indeed he did. Here's one of his other, less well known better ones. I must say it sure does stand up to the test of time. Reads pretty fair over a century after it was penned.
