Not What I Was Expecting

Almost the entire book consists of one soap recipe meaning the oils are the same and in the same proportions except for 1 recipe that had some Hemp Oil and one or two that had some Castor Oil. This main recipe is tweaked by switching out the distilled water with other liquids (tea, beer, milk, etc) and using a different fragrance. Sometimes there's additives to match the fragrance (tea leaves, coffee grounds, fruit zest, an infused olive oil, etc). This is a beginners book with pretty pictures which I did enjoy. Not a resource for trying truly different recipes or even learning how to create a soap recipe.

Disappointed - Not really natural as the title states

I was excited to see this book as I thought at last someone had created wonderful natural products. While the soap is handmade and uses natural oils in them, the addition of fragrance oils makes these soaps totally unnatural. There is nothing natural about synthetic fragrances. The recipes are basically the same with a different fragrance added in to change the recipe. There are many other books out there that are far better at giving varied recipes and instructions than this one. I think the title is very misleading.

Great Beginner Book, Great Recipes

The Natural Soap Chef covers all the basics and shares some great recipes and ideas for making soap. It also has wonderful photography. The content is organized, and the recipes are easy to follow. I'd recommend it to anyone beginning to make soap. Experienced soapers should be warned: most of the recipes are based on one oil recipe, so there is not a lot of variety, but if you are learning to make soap and want to try different things while you master an oil recipe, this is a good book to read. Also, this book does not cover how to create recipes of your own, which some reviewers didn't like, so if you are looking to learn how to do that, you probably don't want to check this book out. However, if you are looking for creative ideas and basic information, this book is excellent.
